The governor of the Belgorod region, Evgeny Savchenko, and the mayor of the regional center, Sergei Bozhenov, visited police major Yuri Sedykh in the hospital, who is undergoing treatment after being stabbed by Sergei Pomazun during his arrest.
The press service of the regional governor reported on Wednesday that Yu. Sedykh’s life is currently out of danger. He will be treated for several days until his health returns to normal.
The governor expressed words of appreciation and gratitude to the policeman who, risking his own life, detained the suspect in the massacre.
“We bow deeply to you. You are a true national hero of the Belgorod region. You committed a heroic act. The residents of the entire Belgorod region and beyond are grateful to you. Thank you,” E. Savchenko’s words are quoted in the message.
The governor wished the policeman a speedy recovery and gave the patient a basket of fruit, noting that after being discharged from the hospital, the police officer would be given a valuable gift.
Yu. Sedykh, in turn, told the head of the region about the events that took place the night before in the area of the railway station.
“30 employees from Kursk came to Belgorod to provide assistance. We were allocated an area for patrolling. By chance, it was in this place that the suspect left to hide from the city. When checking documents, he rushed to run, I tried to detain him, and was stabbed. we managed to knock him to the ground, then his colleagues arrived, the guys did everything. I don’t think we did anything special - that’s our job,” he said.
On April 22, in Belgorod, a previously convicted local resident, S. Pomazun, opened fire. In total, six people died at the hands of the “Belgorod shooter” - three in a gun store and bystanders - a man and two schoolgirls, 14 and 16 years old. Five people died on the spot, a 16-year-old girl died in the hospital.
On the evening of April 23, transport police officers were able to detain S. Pomazun at the railway station in Belgorod. The accused resisted, wounding one of the policemen with a knife.
Police officers who distinguished themselves during the arrest of the “Belgorod shooter” will be presented with state awards.
