Balabanova will be buried in St. Petersburg May 21

The funeral of film director Alexei Balabanov will take place in St. Petersburg at the Smolensk cemetery on Tuesday, May 21, Interfax reports. It also became known about the abolition of a civilian memorial service, which was supposed to take place on Tuesday in one of the pavilions of the Lenfilm film studio. The representative of the press service of Lenfilm explained that Balabanov asked "to sing it only in the temple."

Alexey Balabanov died last Saturday at the 55th year of his life in St. Petersburg. The cause of death was heart failure.

Balabanov was born on February 21, 1959 in Sverdlovsk. In 1983-1987 he worked as an assistant to the director at the Sverdlovsk film studio. In 1990 he graduated from the highest courses of scriptwriters and directors. Since that time, he lived and worked in St. Petersburg. Since 1992, he was the co -founder of the film company "STV", with the help of which he shot most of his films.

Balabanov’s creative path in a large cinema began in 1991, when he shot his first full -length film "Happy Days", a free film adaptation of Prose of Samuel Beckett. In 1994, Balabanov filmed the novel by Franz Kafka "Castle". For this film, the director was awarded the Nick Award.

The criminal tape "Brother" shot by Balabanov in 1997 (Sergey Bodrov played the main role in it, and Vyacheslav Butusov wrote the music) became one of the cult Russian films of the 90s. In 2000, Balabanov removed the Brat-2 sequel.

Among other films of Balabanov - “About Freaks and People”, “It doesn’t hurt”, “Cargo 200”, “War”, “Morphine”, “I also want”. The director was awarded many cinema awards, was a member of the European Film Academy.
