
Apparently, Vladimir Fortov won the election of the President of the Russian Academy of Sciences. This is evidenced by preliminary voting results, RIA Novosti reports.
Voting took place today at closed doors at the general meeting of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In addition to real academicians, corresponding members and delegates from academic institutions included in the RAS structure took part in it. Forters from the very beginning was regarded by observers as a favorite of elections, he was supported by the majority of the Academy and its Presidium. His rivals were the physicist and Nobel laureate Zhores Alferov, as well as economist Alexander Nekipelov. Former President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Yuri Osipov refused to participate in the elections.
Now the voting results should be approved by the President.
Vladimir Fortov is 66 years old. He is a specialist in the field of thermal and space physics. Active member of the Academy since 1991. He has an experience of the official: in the second half of the nineties he was the Minister of Science and Technology and Deputy Prime Minister in the Government of Chernomyrdin. He teaches at the Moscow Physics and Technology Institute. He is a member of the Consulting Scientific Council of the Skolkovo Foundation.
