The Board of Directors of the Russian Economic School approved the resignation of NES Rector Sergei Guriev, and NES Professor Stanislav Anatolyev was appointed acting rector, according to a press release published on the university’s website.

Sergei Guriev remains a professor at the Russian School of Economics, the message emphasizes. The board of directors of the university expressed gratitude to him for his many years of fruitful work as rector. The press release notes that Guriev led NES for almost ten years and during this time the university became a generally recognized leader in the field of economic education and research and deservedly occupies high places in prestigious international rankings. The head of the NES Board of Directors, Maxim Boyko, expressed confidence that changes in management will not affect the coordinated work of the institution’s staff.

Information that Guriev is going to leave the post of rector of NES and may leave Russia appeared in the media on May 28. Shortly before this, it became known that the economist refused to run for the new composition of the supervisory board of Sberbank, is outside Russia and may not return. Guriev himself told Forbes that his decision on Sberbank was related to personal circumstances. He did not comment on rumors about resignation from NES and emigration.

Later it became known that at the beginning of 2013, Guriev was summoned for questioning by the Investigative Committee (IC) for a conversation on the so-called “expert episode” in the YUKOS case. Investigators were interested in Guriev’s work in a group of experts who took part in the public examination of the second criminal case of Mikhail Khodorkovsky. At the same time, tax officials conducted an audit of NES, which, according to a Forbes source, created a “generally frightening picture.” On May 29, the Investigative Committee confirmed that Guriev had been summoned for questioning. Guriev himself said on Thursday that the Investigative Committee had summoned him for questioning more than once.
