Clashes between demonstrators and police resume in Istanbul

Istanbul police used water cannons and tear gas to disperse the demonstration. According to the BBC, more than 60 people were detained and dozens were injured.

Protesters staged a four-day rally in Gezi Park in the city center to express opposition to plans to redevelop that part of Taksim Square. An Istanbul court decided to temporarily suspend the reconstruction, but protests against the construction resulted in dissatisfaction with Prime Minister Erdogan. The performances reached the capital Ankara and other cities, including Bodrum and Izmir.

At the beginning of the month, during a demonstration timed to coincide with the May Day celebrations in Istanbul, where tens of thousands of people came out, there were massive clashes with the police.
