Context

In Astrakhan, a juror who contributed to a not guilty verdict in the case of the explosion at the Kirov market in 2001 was convicted of bribery. As the Investigative Committee reported, the court considered the evidence collected by the department’s employees sufficient to convict 56-year-old Tatyana Tsaregorodtseva. She was found guilty of receiving a significant bribe (Part 2 of Article 290 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). According to the investigation, in 2005, Tsaregorodtseva was a member of the jury of the Astrakhan Regional Court, where a criminal case was considered regarding the explosion on August 19, 2001 in the alley of the Kirov Market, which killed eight people, two of whom were children, and another 61 Astrakhan residents got injured.

The investigation and the court established that the wife of one of the defendants in the criminal case, Magomed Isakov, Aishat Isakova, gave Tsaregorodtseva a video in 2005 so that the latter would spread the opinion of Isakov’s innocence among other jurors. As a result of Tsaregorodtseva’s illegal actions, in December 2005, the jury returned a verdict, on the basis of which the three defendants were acquitted by the Astrakhan Regional Court. After this, Isakova gave Tsaregorodtseva another 12 thousand rubles. Employees of the Investigative Committee of the Investigative Committee for the Astrakhan Region established and proved the fact of the transfer of a bribe. In August 2011, the court found Isakova guilty of giving a bribe to Tsaregorodtseva.

In turn, ex-juror Tsaregorodtseva was sentenced to five years in a general regime colony. When the verdict comes into force, the Investigative Committee will initiate a review of the criminal case into the explosion in the market due to newly discovered circumstances.
