Star Wars creator George Lucas won an Emmy Award for his animated television series Star Wars: The Clone Wars. BBC News reports this.

The cartoon won in the Outstanding Special Class Animated Program category. This is the first Emmy Award of Lucas's career. The prize was presented to him by Carrie Fisher, who played Princess Leia in the original Star Wars trilogy.

The presentation took place on June 16 as part of the Daytime Emmy Award ceremony - an award for the creators of the best programs shown on daytime air. The more prestigious Primetime Emmy Award (for the best evening television program) will be awarded on September 22, 2013.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars has aired on Cartoon Network since October 2008. Viewers were presented with five full seasons, including a total of 108 episodes. The last of them aired on March 2, 2013, after which Lucasfilm announced that the project would be canceled. Fans of the cartoon were also promised some additional materials that would continue its storyline.

Lucas cited the need to focus on the seventh part of the main Star Wars series as the main reason for refusing to continue working on The Clone Wars. A new episode of the film was announced in the fall of 2012, after Lucasfilm was acquired by The Walt Disney Company.

It is known that Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill will return to the screen in the new series. The film will be directed by JJ Abrams, and Star Wars: Episode 7 is scheduled to be released in 2015.
