The Council of Europe provides a devastating report on the case of Magnitsky

The deputy of the Switzerland Parliament Andreas Gross presented in the Council of Europe a devastating report on the case of the deceased lawyer of the Hermitage Capital Foundation Sergei Magnitsky. The Gross prepared a report under the heading “refuse impunity to the killers of Sergey Magnitsky” on behalf of Pase, which was given to him in November 2012. In the course of work on the document, the deputy held meetings in the UK, Switzerland, in Cyprus. GROSS also visited Russia twice, but he was not able to talk with all those interested in persons.

The author of the report claims that officials of a very high rank are involved in the concealment of crimes identified by Magnitsky. "He (Magnitsky) died because he opposed the pressure of middle -level officials who tried to hide their crimes. Why then the Russian state at such a high level and so stubbornly tries to hide this crime?" - Gross asks the question. The negation that after the arrest was filed with numerous complaints of violation of his rights and refusal to medical care, the deputy characterizes as cynicism.

Attempts by Russian officials posthumously accusing Magnitsky himself of the crimes revealed by him, according to the speaker, are unconvincing and doubtful. He concludes that the analysis of the flows of stolen budget funds, as well as the fact of the commission of similar crimes by a gang of Klyuev long before 2007, when the criminal scheme was opened by Magnitsky, refutes the charges against the lawyer.

Speaking about the investigation of the causes of the death of a lawyer, Gross also convicts the Russian authorities in the cover of crime. Officials deny the fact of Magnitsky’s beating before death, the deputy notes. Meanwhile, visible damage was on the body of the deceased, and the relatives of the lawyer were refused an independent autopsy. The speaker also mentions manipulations with a death certificate. The initial version of the document spoke of suspicion of traumatic brain injury, while this indication was excluded from the final version of the certificate. On June 13, the European Parliament adopted the resolution "On the rule of law in Russia." In this document, the deputies again raised the question of the EU Council and the European Commission on the introduction of restrictive measures against Russian officials involved in the death of Magnitsky, namely, on the ban on their entry into the European Union and freezing financial assets in the EU.

On June 4, 48 members of the European Parliament signed an application for an intention to block the initiative to grant a visa -free entry into the EU for Russian officials. In their appeal to the Ministers of Foreign and Internal Affairs of the EU members of the European Union, deputies stated that if in the near future the analogue of the American Law of Magnitsky, introducing visa sanctions against Russian officials involved in the Magnitsky case and other violations of human rights in Russia, is not adopted in the EU, they will vote against the possibility of visa -free entry into the EU countries for owners Russian service passports.
