
The Mufti of Tatarstan Kamil Samilullin appealed to Apple and Google with a request to translate the iOS and Android operating systems to the Tatar language, Interfax reports with reference to the mufti of the republic.
"The Tatars are the second largest people in Russia, which lives in their historical territory, and the Tatar language is understood about 200 million Turkic -speaking people around the world," the mufti’s letter to the head of the Apple representative office in Russia, Peter Engrobro Nielsen and the General Director of Google in Russia, Julia Solovieva.
Samigullin explained that the Tatar alphabet contains a number of letters that are not in the Russian alphabet, so the Tatars "experience certain discomfort when writing messages." In his opinion, the introduction of the Tatar language in the mentioned operating systems will make the products of these companies more popular in Russia and in the world. Mufti also noted that the spiritual department of the Muslims of the republic is ready to provide comprehensive gratuitous assistance in this project.
