The Egyptian Ministry of Internal Affairs has issued a harsh ultimatum to supporters of President Mohamed Morsi, who was removed from power a month ago, who refuse to stop protests against the new leadership of the country. Yesterday, the Muslim Brotherhood was demanded to end the sit-in and immediately leave Cairo's Rabaa al-Adawiya and al-Nahda squares. The police threatened to apply “special measures” to the protesters if they refused to meet the authorities’ demands.

The protesters flatly refused to accept the ultimatum. As the Alliance Against the Coup d'Etat organization associated with the Muslim Brotherhood explained, their protest is peaceful and the authorities do not have the right to ban it.

This week, the army received from the country's new President Adli Mansour the right to arrest participants in street demonstrations. This means that thousands of Muslim Brotherhood supporters now face arrest. The new Egyptian leadership flatly refuses to hear about any “peaceful protests” and demonstrates its readiness to suppress the protests of the Muslim Brotherhood by force. According to the authorities, this is the only way to save the country from civil war.

There is growing concern about the current situation in Egypt abroad. German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle, who arrived in Cairo, called on the parties to “immediately establish dialogue.” The US State Department demanded that the Egyptian leadership "respect the right of Egyptians to freedom of peaceful assembly." And British Foreign Secretary William Hague insists that Cairo “put an immediate end to the bloodshed.”
