The service was built on the basis of the MTPROTO protocol, developed by the older brother of Pavel Nikolai Durov, and supports a complex system for encryption of correspondence. Theoretically, all your messages and media files stored in the cloud are in full safety, and even the NSA will not be able to get access to them. The latter causes some doubts against the background of the recent LavaBit postal service, because formally Telegram is an American messenger whose server is not only in Europe and Asia, but also in the USA. The service does not require fees and does not show advertising. The application serves as an experimental example for the participants of the Durov's Android Challenge contest, which Durov announced several weeks ago. The result of the competition will be an analogue of the messenger for Android.
