The Basmanny Court of Moscow extended the term of the arrest of the mayor of Yaroslavl Evgeny Urlashov, Rapsei reports. Judge Natalya Mushnikova granted the application of the investigation, leaving Urlashov in custody until December 3, and for five months.

On Monday, the College of Judges of the Moscow City Court recognized the decision to be legitimate to remove Urlashov until the end of the investigation in the case. The argument that this was done "for the good of the inhabitants of Yaroslavl, so as not to deprive the city of the leader," they were unfounded, they noted. The job description provides for the procedure for performing duties by the deputy mayor. The defense also rejected the argument of Urlashov’s pressure on witnesses "through its lawyers."

Representatives of the state prosecution noted that the crimes imputed by Urlash were committed precisely using the mayor’s powers. That is why they asked to shift him from the post of mayor. In addition, according to the prosecution, Urlashov appointed the acting not the person who should accept these duties under the charter.

On July 18, by the decision of the Basmanny Court of Moscow, Urlashov was removed from his post at the request of the TFR. “The purpose of the removal is to prevent Urlashov to make political decisions,” the accused’s lawyer said then. Urlashov himself opposed his removal from his post. "All that was said is speculation. I consider myself an innocent person. I did not know about any 14 million. I was framed," Urlashov said. In his opinion, artificial excitement is created around his business, and the economy with politics is intertwined in it.

"The decision on the removal of Urlashov from his position was adopted primarily in the interests of residents of the city of Yaroslavl. This will allow the municipal authorities to appoint an acting mayor, who can perform the functions of the mayor in full. In addition, Urlashov will be deprived of the administrative resource, in the event of an intention to exert possible pressure on the investigation," said the official representative of the SCR, Vladimir Markin. Markin announced the intention to file a petition for the removal of Urlashov from office on July 10.

Urlashov was detained by the police on June 2. Two criminal cases of attempting to receive a bribe were instituted against him. The investigation insists that the mayor of Yaroslavl and his subordinates from December last year to July 2 of this year extorted a bribe of 45 million rubles from the entrepreneur from the amount transferred to the company at the expense of the work performed. In addition, according to investigators, in May 2013, Urlashov demanded a bribe from the entrepreneur for refusing the claims in the arbitration process in the city hall’s claim. According to Urlashov himself, a political provocation was committed against him.
