The German automaker Daimler AG intends to create an unmanned vehicle by 2020 and thus regain its first place among premium car manufacturers, reports Reuters.

Automakers and suppliers around the world are working to create safe and convenient cars through automation and are trying to bring their technologies to the mass market.

“We want to be the first to launch autonomous functions in vehicle production,” said Thomas Weber, head of development at Daimler AG. The concern will present its technologies this week at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Earlier, the Japanese Nissan also announced plans to launch an unmanned vehicle. Google has equipped several cars with radar that allows them to drive themselves on roads in California and Nevada.

Daimler AG is one of the world's leading automakers, the fifth largest automaker in the world. It was formed in November 1998 as a result of the acquisition by Daimler-Benz AG of a company that is one of the “Big Three” of the US automotive industry - Chrysler LLC.

The largest shareholder of Daimler AG is the Arab investment fund Aabar Investments with 9.1% of shares.
