In his speech, the American leader noted that he prefers to solve the problem of using chemical weapons in Syria with diplomatic agents, but still does not exclude the possibility of a military attack on the Middle Eastern country.

“Terrible things are happening around the world, and it is not in our power to solve each of these problems,” Obama said. “But when we can protect children from gas poisoning and thereby ensure the safety of our own children with small efforts and with a slight risk - I believe that we must act.”

The US President once again emphasized that the operation in Syria can only be short -term and ground forces in it are not planned to be involved.

On the eve of Obama, after a conversation with British Prime Minister David Cameron and France President Francois Olland , agreed to give the Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad for two weeks to transfer chemical weapons to international observers. It was reported that Secretary of State John Kerry intends to discuss in the near future the initiative of Syria's disarmament with the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

This was done after Syria officially agreed to Russia's proposal to transfer to the chemical weapons under international control. The country's Prime Minister Vael Nader al-Halki explained this decision with the intention to "stop bloodshed in Syria and prevent the war."

Russian officials, for their part, said that they asked Damascus in the near future to draw up a specific plan for the transfer of chemical weapons to the control of the international community and the subsequent destruction of chemical shells.

Earlier on Tuesday, Kerry, at a hearing in the House of Representatives, stated that the White House was still interested in the sanctions of Congress for a military operation in Syria. This sanction, the Secretary of State explained, is necessary in case Russia's proposal for the transfer of Syrian chemical weapons for international control will be impossible.
