Updating the Dow Jones index

For the first time in almost ten years, the composition of companies included in the main exchange index in the United States Dow Jones is significantly changing. Three newcomers in the index are the Goldman Sachs investment bank, VISA credit cards issuer and manufacturer of sportswear and Nike shoes.

Three companies that have left the Dow Johns index: Alcoa's metallurgical concern since 1959, the Hewlett-Packard and Bank of America computer company, which was the largest US banking institution two years ago.

30 leading enterprises from different sectors of the farm are selected into the index so that its dynamics reflect the general state of the American economy as reliably as possible.

Bank of America got into the Dow Jones index in February 2008 and was removed from it for the reason that the quotes of his shares for the past period fell by 65%. Nevertheless, the growing role of the financial industry in the modern American economy is indicated by the enrollment of Goldman Sachs and Visa in the index.

Although the Dow Jones is considered the main exchange index, it is much less representative than the S&P 500 index, reflecting the quotes of 500 leading companies.

The first and third in capitalization American companies, Apple Inc and Google Inc, remain outside the Dow Jones, because the huge cost of their shares would affect the balance of the entire index.
