Full video version of the Solzhenitsyn Degradation program here
Elena Rykovtseva: Very soon, the country will begin wide official solemn honors of Alexander Solzhenitsyn, he has an anniversary - 95 years old. We are the first to begin our celebrations with Benedict Mikhailovich Sarnov, homely, unofficial. But still, I wanted to ask you about the celebrations that are coming. What do you think, how much the scope will be, and if it is large, then why, what thoughts, feelings, what hopes will the modern Russian power into this triumph put?
Benedict Sarnov: I don’t want to guess what scope it will accept - I don’t know. But if it takes a large scope, then it will be largely artificially artificially. Because Solzhenitsyn, of course,, as they say, is leaving, even a departed nature. His role was huge in due time, now, I do not think that it is so great. But the current government, I think, is very convenient and needed. I think that the president is relatively recently, our president did not in vain complain that he was not in the school curriculum, insisted that he be. I think we will return to this topic. And if there are really celebrations, then my book is least suitable for this topic. There is a huge literature about Solzhenitsyn and a lot of pasqual, pasquilant literature about it, revealing, also artificially organized and fucked by our authority at one time. I am infinitely far from her, I treat these books with disgust. But I myself am very critical of Solzhenitsyn, although from completely different, completely different positions.
Elena Rykovtseva: You were ahead of me a little, I wanted to say that the reason for our meeting today is just in the publication of your book. I do not know if you specifically timed it to this anniversary year. It is unlikely. But, nevertheless, this book was published, which is called the "Solzhenitsyn Phenomenon" Benedict Sarnov. Of course, I wonder why you have taken it right now. You say that not to the anniversary, why then?
Benedict Sarnov: Of course, I did not think about the anniversary. Honestly, I did not even think that I would begin this book, although I wrote about it before. The fact is that even under the Soviet regime during the years of the so-called stagnation, when I realized that it was almost impossible to work in criticism and in literature, I began to write, as it was called then, to publish it without any hope, just not to disqualify and try to somehow express what I wanted. At first I wrote two such books on the table, one was called the Mandelstam case, the other Zoshchenko’s case. Each had its own name, but it was in one case a heading, in another subtitle. Subsequently, I wrote the “Case of Erenburg”, I conceived a cycle of such cases, “Mayakovsky’s case”.
Elena Rykovtseva: cases, incidents, phenomena.
Benedict Sarnov: And then suddenly a phenomenon. Why Solzhenitsyn? First of all, he should say that he played a very large role not only in the life of our country, my personal life, he himself, his personality, his “Ivan Denisovich”, who, as Marshak told me: “I always told Alexander Trifonovich Twardowski when“ Ivan Denisovich appeared ”, that the fire should be laid out well, and the fire will fall from the sky.” Here Solzhenitsyn was this fire that fell from the sky. And the big chapter in my book of memoirs is dedicated to Alexander Isaevich Solzhenitsyn. Why all cases, and here is a phenomenon? After all, when I wrote, I assumed that there would be a “case of Solzhenitsyn” among all my cases.
Elena Rykovtseva: Would you belittle him, of course.
Benedict Sarnov: But, you see, at the very last moment, even the file in the computer was called the "case of Solzhenitsyn". But then suddenly the thought of the phenomenon arose. To explain this briefly, I will read the epigraph that I have to this book: “Phenomenon. 1. A rare, unusual phenomenon or outstanding, exceptional person in any way. 2. The subjective content of our consciousness, which does not reflect objective reality. Dictionary of foreign words.” So, this definition of a vocabulary of foreign words is very well suited to Solzhenitsyn.
Elena Rykovtseva: It is the second definition.
Benedict Sarnov: In both of these meanings, not only in the second, but also in the first, he is really a phenomenal personality.
Elena Rykovtseva: In the first, it is somehow obvious, the second is more amicable.
Benedict Sarnov: The second is that, no matter how sad it was, he was not the person for whom we took him, not the figure for whom we took him, not the writer for whom we accepted him. Here, I would say, the problem for me and the incentive for writing this book was, firstly, this tremendous gap between the power of seduction with this figure, in love with it and the depth of disappointment in it. And the first question that stood before me had to solve him, it was impossible to answer him unequivocally, and for this it was necessary to delve into deep and write such a thick book, maybe not necessarily so thick, but it happened to me, the problem was to understand what it was - whether he was masked, did not reveal himself to the fullest, did not discover his secrets, and impudent glances. Or he did some way, some evolution was at first by the fact that we were not mistaken then when we loved him, admired him and supported in every possible way to the best of our weak forces, and what he appeared before us later, in later years.
Elena Rykovtseva: Benedict Mikhailovich, maybe this happened to you, maybe you have changed, maybe you began to look at him differently. Maybe he remained himself, but you didn’t see something, did not calculate it?
Benedict Sarnov: No, I have not changed, but he is at first in a cautious form ...
Elena Rykovtseva: I did not say about you personally, you not only talk about yourself when you are talking about disappointment.
Benedict Sarnov: Voinovich, who wrote a very sharp book about him.
Elena Rykovtseva: "Portrait against the background of myth"?
Benedict Sarnov: He wrote in fact the novel "Moscow 2042", in which he brought the grotesque image of Simych Karnavalov.
Elena Rykovtseva: For whom Voinovich was cut.
Benedict Sarnov: He, of course, did not mean Solzhenitsyn, but simply this need and the ability to create and create myths, sometimes malicious, malignant myths, the creation of the cult, the creation of a cult.
Elena Rykovtseva: Benedict Mikhailovich, of course, Solzhenitsyn prototype of this character.
Benedict Sarnov: In this novel, Simych Karnavalov, of course, some features of Solzhenitsyn guessed and many rushed for him. This book openly says about Solzhenitsyn and there is nothing to say. And after all, he did not change at all, what he was, so he remained, Voinovich. And all the people of my circle and people, even going beyond this circle, who supported, loved, admired Solzhenitsyn, no, they did not change. It was he who changed or opened up. To this question, it is necessary to answer, opened or changed, to what extent he opened, in which he changed. I think that both took place.
Elena Rykovtseva: If he opened, then he hid, then there was something that he hid from the very beginning and for some reason could not show? By what, if he could not, if he hid?
Benedict Sarnov: I'll tell you. Not that hid.
Elena Rykovtseva: refrained from manifestations.
Benedict Sarnov: I do not want to say that he was a hypocrite, no, he did not hide, but he was not fully revealed.
Elena Rykovtseva: Why?
Benedict Sarnov: Now I will tell you. Firstly, because he acted as a fighter with the Soviet government, with the KGB, with totalitarianism, with Stalin, of course, it is quite obvious that Lenin was as disgusting to him as Stalin, that he later wrote directly about it.
Elena Rykovtseva: It has not changed.
Benedict Sarnov: But he could not open it then, he was printed by Ivan Denisovich with great difficulty and with a great creak only because before that Khrushchev exposed Stalin and in this ideological campaign Khrushchev Solzhenitsyn and Ivan Denisovich were very useful. Secondly, I think that here is his second secret or, in any case, secrecy, unwillingness openly and openly speak out on this topic-it was his anti-Semitism, which was inherent in him, as I tried to show, even in his then early books, in the “first circle” and others.
Elena Rykovtseva: But you showed that he was not so vividly read then.
Benedict Sarnov: Not so, when he was exposed, but still it became clear. This, of course, is not such a global theme of anti -Semitism, but important. I don’t remember who, it seems, Erenburg said that anti -Semitism is an international language of fascism. But I look into the future and a rather distant future. But the main thing, when they supported him, the point here is not how my classmate was sent to me now, that some Jews supported him - this is stupidity, he was supported by democratically -minded people who hated it denied Soviet power from the standpoint of democratic, like all totalitarianism, authoritative regimes, autocracy. Solzhenitsyn, of course, in a softer, correct form, has always been an opponent of democracy. He became more definitely, more and more sharply mastered this thought with his consciousness, more and more. But he, as he spoke directly and frankly, hated February, dramatically negatively belonged to the West. And when he was in the West and sniffed this West, as they say, he was fully tasted, he began to speak with frank and harsh criticism of the West. And we all supported, people who are democratically and westernly, I would say. Because the point is not that this is not an old dispute between the Slavophiles and Westerners, the Old Russian dispute, but the fact is that I did not talk, I, roughly speaking, classify myself to Westerners, but this does not mean that I want Russia to become America, Russia should remain Russia. I just emerge from how the Japanese managed to remain the Japanese, focusing on Western values, on European values, on modern Western civilization, and this is a deep Far East. And Russia, which has always been a European country, is always Russian culture, and Tolstoy, and whoever is repulsed, like Dostoevsky from the West, but still did not think of themselves otherwise than the cultural part of Europe.
Elena Rykovtseva: Let's stop. You said that people who democratically think and support democracy, while pro -Western, worshiped, cultivated, exalted a person who actually hated democracy, you put it so much, did not love and criticized the West. At that moment they did not understand this when they supported and worshiped?
Benedict Sarnov: You understand what thing, partly understood. I already said that he did not open very much.
Elena Rykovtseva: So, they did not understand all the same, they did not see this in him. Or was it not the main one at that moment?
Benedict Sarnov: At that moment, our dissident movement was motley, there were already such frank nationalists, there was such a Samizdat gesto magazine, that is, people of a rather reactionary and authoritarian image of thoughts, they also opposed the Soviet regime, against the clamp of censorship. There was a short period when different forces in his confrontation to the Soviet regime already rotting and even, I would say, stinking, were united, so Solzhenitsyn became the leader of both of them. The famous phrase of Lenin: Before unite, we must be scattered - this is not taking into account this then, we were ready to unite with anyone, at least with a damn thing, only against this decay, against this rotting, stinking, destroying, but seemed to us almost eternal Soviet regime.
Elena Rykovtseva: That's what you say now, you can delete the Solzhenitsyn name and insert some other. There is another modern topic in your book just about the endless worship and the cult that people experienced for Solzhenitsyn and carried it through years, regardless of how he was revealed, how he was closed. You are talking about Lydia Chukovskaya, for example, this fan, who repelled any attempts to encroach on the honor of her idol. Here I will read the last phrase from the book “Portrait against the backdrop of the myth” of Voinovich, a very bitter phrase: “Solzhenitsyn’s name is still inspired by a respectful thrill, the other mystical fear. The truth about him could not be told for one reason, now the other, but little distinguishable from the first and with similar consequences. The opponents of Solzhenitsyn once excluded me from the Union of Writers and forbade my books in Sovetskoye Supporters of Slzhenitsyn for a parody forbidden my book in the West and in Russia were not cursed by opponents and supporters, and now they were afraid of printing, and now they are afraid of all in the conviction that it is not difficult to live.
Very modern. Look: it was impossible to scold, because it is persecuted, and then it was impossible to scold, because it was impossible to fight off these crowds of fans who conclude, stuck. Isn't it relevant, not modern?
Benedict Sarnov: Of course, this is relevant and modern. How do you tell you? Hypnosis, the inertia of the prevailing opinion, became familiar, became familiar and even unshakable, unshakable. One of the important topics of my book and one of the incentives for writing it was my always -hearted hostility and even aversion to inadequate estimates when a person was inflated. For all my sympathy, relative sympathy and disagreement with the criticism that came from the side of Soviet power to people like Yevtushenko as Bella Akhmadulina, of course, when they were persecuted, I sympathized with them. But this inadequacy, exaggerated meaning - it always annoyed me. And in Solzhenitsyn, even when I was his fan, when I highly appreciated him, read, in every possible way, as Voinovich wrote, supported me as much strength, I was always infinitely annoyed that he barely appeared, they immediately began to compare him with Dostoevsky, to put almost higher than them. This is Russia.
When Nekrasov Nikolay Alekseevich died, Dostoevsky, speaking at the funeral, deftly, to somehow put the young people, for whom Nekrasov was a prophet, a saint, a great poet, he said not very confident, but still, that he was somewhere near Pushkin. And then voices rang out from the crowd: not nearby, but above! This is Russia. The fact that the stereotype has already formed, that during his lifetime he became called the great writer of the Russian land, that he was compared with Tolstoy, with Dostoevsky, with God knows who - this hypnotized many and still acts. People do not re -read, people do not change their opinions, they are captured by this inertia, this is already stuck in their brain.
In addition, Alexander Isaevich himself thought so, perceived himself, and he created this myth himself. But he always had a sensation, and it also became into the heads of many people that he was always the first and only. The Gulag Archipelago is the first and only real revelation of Stalinism, the Stalinist concentration camps! While some people were aware, and I belonged to this part of our society due to some biographical characteristics, they knew that there was a huge literature about the Stalinist camps, that Margolin's excellent book was a journey into the country of Zek, there was no hut, and everyone should not list.
And most importantly, everyone said: he was the first to strike on the world communist movement, he was the first to expose the Stalin region. Forgetting that the first vowel, not from emigration and anti-Soviet, roughly speaking, in the then ideology, and the first report of Khrushchev from the official Soviet source was the first of Khrushchev at the twentieth congress. It was Khrushchev who delivered this first powerful blow to the world communist movement, split it and so on.
Elena Rykovtseva: You say in your book that he really carried himself, he broadcast, he did not write - he broadcast. You pay special attention to him to “writing to the Leads” - this is a fundamental moment for you.
Benedict Sarnov: The fact that a large person, a large writer, is not always big, in any case, not always the great exaggerates his role and meaning - this is normal. Lev Nikolaevich Tolstoy introduced into everyday life such an expression "energy of error." That is, a person exaggerates the meaning of what he does. Lev Nikolaevich said that every time I sat down for great work, I had the feeling that the world would change, that I would change the world. Forty centuries, he repeated the phrase of Napoleon, look at you from the tops of these pyramids. This feeling, this consciousness needs an artist, even if he is only an artist. But this is a misconception, with which the sobering later comes and it is necessary to part with this. Alexander Isaevich possessed a huge energy of error, but at the same time he was far from the idea that this is a delusion, he was always a carrier of truth. This is also normal. But, you see, this is normal for people of a different type, not for the artist. This is normal for a politician, this is normal for a person of the authorities, who is spinning from this power and he becomes inadequate. This is normal for people like Marx or Freud. Marx's focus on the fact that everything is rooted in political economy or fraud concentration, that all the troubles of a person and his suffering lie in the field of sexual experiences - this is all within the norm.
Elena Rykovtseva: He did not consider himself only an artist, he considered himself much more than an artist.
Benedict Sarnov: Yes.
It happened.
What do we see?
