Russian cardiologists won the European contest "First among equals"

Cardiologists from Bakulevka won the European competition "The First among Equal." The Cup of the European Cardiological Association in Russia, everything is won: we have worthy doctors, we have a worthy scientific center, and patients have where to apply for help

The Russians won in Amsterdam at the annual European Congress Cardiologists, bypassing two favorites in the final: the team of the Cardiology Department of the University Clinic of Zurich and the team of Clinic San Giovanni University of Rome. The final competition was held in the largest hall of Congress, which was able to accommodate more than 2000 spectators participating. Organizes the competition Committee on Clinical Recommendations of the European Society of Cardiologists. And European clinical recommendations are the basis on which national recommendations are developed. The basis of how we should be treated.

And we won our! They won, fighting with those who are developing these recommendations. The jury was headed by the director of the Committee on Clinical Recommendations of the European Cardiologists Society Professor Jose Luis Skorano, Director of the Madrid Heart Institute. It was a competition where doping would not help and the “agreement” cannot be organized. Pure victory. As for it all, we are all. Each of us sooner or later becomes a patient.

Previously, the jury selects the captains from many applications. A cardiologist who has established himself for publications and performances at international congresses can become a captain, is known in the community of professionals. Then the captain is gaining a team of five colleagues. This year three teams reached the final: cardiologists from Zurich, from Rome and ours from the clinical and diagnostic department of the Scientific Center for Cardiovascular Surgery named after Bakuleva. The Zurich team is last year's winner of the competition. She got into the final automatically. Two other teams took place in absentee half a year selection.

The team of Zurich is headed by Professor Thomas Lusher, Director of Cardiology and Director of the Research Department of the Institute of Physiology of the University of Zurich, editor -in -chief of the leading cardiological journal European Health Journal . Another “heavyweight” in the Swiss team is Frank Ruzhichka, a member of the Committee on Clinical Recommendations of the European Society of Cardiologists. He himself managed the development of European recommendations for the management of patients with arterial hypertension and heart failure.

Our team was headed by the chief researcher at the Center for Cardiovascular Surgery. A.N. Bakuleva Professor Simon Matskuplishvili. At 29 years ago, Simon became one of the youngest doctors of medical sciences in Russia. At 34 - a professor. Today he is the chairman of the echocardiography section of the All -Russian Scientific Society of Cardiologists, an honorary member of the European Society of Cardiologists and the American Collegium of Cardiologists.

The jury of the competition, having approved our captain, decided to “play along” with Russia, allowing to recruit team members from all over the country. “They thought, apparently, that we could not find strong players in one clinic,” explains Simon Matskuplishvili. -But I gathered a team in my clinical and diagnostic department of the Bakulev Scientific Center. And we began to prepare. It is known that competitive issues are based on European clinical recommendations. They are known to us, this is the basis of our work. But even daily (!) It comes out to 50 articles in the specialty. ”

The format of the competition is questions about the management of patients with cardiological diseases, and the clinical examples are selected contradictory and complex. Cases are represented by leading clinics in Europe. Each team must also prepare their questions for opponents. One is from clinical practice, the other - on the history and culture of the country.

In the final, for 30 seconds, it was necessary to get acquainted with the clinical situation and make the right decision - how to treat. The team was the first to answer, then - Zurich, then ours. According to the rules, if one team did not answer the question or was mistaken, the next, answering correctly, received an additional point. The Romans were mistaken twice, the Swiss corrected them and earned additional points. Ours were never mistaken, answered all questions, but the leaders nevertheless reached Zurich, using the misses of the Roman team.

In the last round there were two questions left: we had to ask our own at home, the question of Zurich, and Rome - to us. The judge announced that these issues would solve the outcome of the competition. “And then the Zurich team, answering our question, asked for the help of the hall (allowed by the regulations of the competition. - L.R. ). Of the four answers, one had to choose one. But two different answers sounded from the hall. One of them was right. We froze: what will the team choose? The Swiss were mistaken, ”says Simon Matskuplishvili. - And we answered the last question prepared by the Roman team right! “The first among equals”-we, the team of the clinical and diagnostic department of the Bakulev Scientific Center! The winning team can participate in the next competition without qualifying stages. Of course, we will try to protect our title in 2014. ”
