Director Kirill Serebrennikov abandoned 30 million rubles transferred to him by the Ministry of Culture to shoot Tchaikovsky. “The producer of Sabina Yeremeyeva is returning these 30 million rubles to our state, eager for entertainment and cash register blockbusters,” he wrote on his Facebook page. “We will look for money for the film about the main national composer, about Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, abroad of our homeland.”

Serebrennikov called the basis for such a decision the refusal of the Russian Cinema Fund to pay for other expenses to shoot a film, the total budget of which the director estimates at 240 million rubles. The foundation explained his refusal by the absence of the film "The audience potential". Meanwhile, the director himself unequivocally connects him with the recent discussions regarding the composer’s sexual orientation.

So, the head of the Ministry of Culture Vladimir Medinsky said on Tuesday: "There is no evidence that Tchaikovsky was a homosexual." The minister added that the film "We must shoot about the genius of Tchaikovsky, and not about rumors around his biography."

Now his pre-war episodes will not take place in 1940, as expected in the original version of the script, but in the 1930s. It is known, however, that the Fabula of the picture is based on real events and episodes dated to 1940, took place precisely this year, and not earlier.
