The finalists of the "Enlightener" are named

Today, September 26, the Gogol Center in Moscow announced finalists of the Prize in the field of popular science literature "Enlightener" of the 2013 season.

The short list was announced by the members of the jury, as well as the founder of the award Dmitry Zimin and the co -chairs of the organizing committee: writer and TV presenter Alexander Arkhangelsk and literary critic, researcher, head of the institute of the book Alexander Gavrilov. Of the 25 books of a long list, the jury chose 7 finalists: 3 books on natural and accurate sciences, and 4 - on humanitarian.

“The jury members considered that this year the overall level of quality of natural scientific books was lower than in past years. In order not to reduce the bar and not to compromise, we left only three books in the short list, and four in the humanitarian, ”explained Alexander Arkhangelsky.

Short list of the Enlightener Award 2013:

Natural and accurate sciences:
- Dmitry Zhukov - “Wait, who is leading? Biology of human behavior and other animals ”(M.: Alpina Non-Fix, 2013);
- Peter Obraztsov - “Amazing stories about the creatures of the most diverse. The secrets of those who inhabit the earth, water and air ”(M.: Lomonosov, 2012);
- Alexander Petrov - “Gravity. From crystal spheres to mole holes ”(Fryazino: century-2, 2013).

Humanities:
- Alexander Vaskin - “Moscow, a spite of a fire. The pioneers in 1812 ”(M.: Publishing House" Sputnik+", 2012);
- Dmitry Kopelev- “The Ocean section in the 16-18 centuries. The origins and evolution of piracy ”(St. Petersburg: Kriga, 2013);
- Vera Milchin- “Paris in 1814-1848. Everyday life ”(M.: New Literary Review, 2013);
- Victor Sonkin - “There was Rome” (M.: AST: Corpus , 2013).

Each finalist will receive a cash prize of 100 thousand rubles, and also give lectures in the Moscow CC ZIL and will take part in a lecture tour of the cities of Russia. A cash certificate of 130 thousand rubles for promoting books in the market will also award publishers of books of prize laureates.

The awarding ceremony will be held on November 21. Each of them will be awarded a monetary prize of 700 thousand rubles.

This year, in addition to the two main nominations (“For the Best Natural Scientific Book” and “For the Best Humanitarian Book”), the jury will present a special prize “For Best Biography”. In total, three biographies are nominated: “Gumilev, the son of Gumilyov”, “Great Churchill” and “Darwin”. Two finalists will receive 40 thousand rubles each, and the laureate - 80 thousand rubles.

The Enlightener Award was established in 2008 by the founder and honorary president of Vimpelcom and the founder of the Fund for Non-Profit Dynasty's Non-Profit Programs Dmitry Zimin in order to attract readers' attention to the educational genre, as well as create prerequisites for expanding the popular science literature market.

The jury of the award includes the president of the Polytechnic Museum Boris Saltykov (chairman), physicist, translator Alexei Semikhatov, poet, mathematician, teacher Evgeny Bunimovich, biologist, journalist Ilya Kolmanovsky, 2011 Laureate Vladimir Plungyan, astronomer, laureate of 2012 Vladimir Surdin and Japanese, Alexander Laureate Alexander Meshcheryakov.
