On Thursday, September 26, the first monument to Alexander Solzhenitsyn was opened on the Alley of the Nobel laureates of the Belgorod State University.
The monument to Solzhenitsyn is the third sculptural composition on the alley, ITAR-TASS reports. There are already monuments to the domestic Nobel laureates Alexander Bunin and Mikhail Sholokhov.
The Governor of the Belgorod Region Yevgeny Savchenko called the opening of the monument to Sznenitsyn a "significant, symbolic event." “I think there is a place for both Brodsky and Pasternak,” he said.
The governor shared his impressions of a personal meeting with Alexander Solzhenitsyn: “We talked about the problems of local self -government. Alexander Isaevich was very interested in socio-political life. ” At the end of his speech, the head of the region wished students to read Solzhenitsyn and, by his example, equip Russia.
The author of the sculpture Anatoly Shishkov said that he portrayed the great writer and thinker sitting on a simple stool in simple clothes and in rough camp boots, showing his hard fate and life. Solzhenitsyn holds a book in his hands and reflects on the fate of the country.
