September 30, Monday

Former American intelligence officer Edward Snowden is included in the list of applicants for the Academician Sakharov Award for 2013. The announcement of the laureates will take place on October 10 at the session of the European Parliament. Snowden has four competitors: a 16-year-old human rights activist from Pakistan Malala Yusufzai and the Belarusian opposition, ex-candidate for the President Nikolai Statkevich, an activist of the “Young Front” Eduard Lobov and the head of the human rights center in Yasnaya, Ales Belyatsky.

October 2, Wednesday

The Presidium of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation, without explanation, postponed a meeting on the revision of the sentence in the first case of the former employee of the company Yukos Alexei Pichugin for an indefinite period. The Supreme Court was to make a decision on the appointment of a new trial in the Pichugin case. The foundation is the decision of the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg of October 23, 2012.

October 3, Thursday

Maxim Luzyanin, convicted in the “Swamp case”, refused to testify at the “Twelve process”. Earlier, Luzyanin collaborated with the investigation, pleaded guilty, and his business was considered in a special order, but now he decided to take advantage of the 51st article of the Constitution of the Russian Federation (“No one is obliged to testify against himself, his spouse and close relatives ...”).

Amnesty International recognized the three defendants in the “swamp business” (Artem Savelov, Vladimir Akimenkov and Mikhail Kosenko) with prisoners of conscience. On October 1, in the debate in the Zamoskvoretsky court of Moscow, the prosecutor asked Kosenko to recognize as insane. The verdict in his case will be issued on October 8.

October 4, Friday

The Kirov Regional Court postponed the consideration of an appeal in the “Cirules case” on October 16. The defense of Alexei Navalny filed an appropriate application, since the process was previously appointed on October 9, but on the same day Navalny was summoned to hearings in the Moscow City Court in another case.

The Strasbourg Court of Human Rights awarded more than € 1 million compensation to relatives of the residents of Chechnya, who suffered in April 2000 during the shelling by Russian troops of the village of Aslanbek-Sheripovo. Then 18 relatives of the applicants were killed.
