The Russian Vice Consul in Panama Evgeny Manilov was wounded on Friday as a result of an attack, RIA Novosti reports with reference to local media. The diplomat was injured by a knife in the parking lot of an international business center in which the Russian Embassy is located. He was taken to the hospital.
The condition of the Russian vice-consul wounded in Panama is stable, reports the Mexican Agency Notimex. The police managed to detain the attacker - a citizen of Ukraine in hot pursuit.
According to the Russian ambassador to Panama Alexei Ermakov, the police are already investigating what had happened, and after the operation the patient came to his senses, communicates with relatives and employees of the embassy, but doctors are difficult to predict when he is discharged from the hospital. “Nothing threatens his health,” said Ermakov.
"The Ukrainian citizen previously applied to the consular department of the Russian Embassy, it was clear that he was inadequate, asked for 3-5 thousand dollars, apparently this is a narcotic intoxication that would be verified," said Yermakov.
The Ukrainian arrived in Panama 1.5-2 months ago as a tourist.
Ermakov also said that after the incident, the embassy turned to the local police and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with a request to strengthen the protection of the diplomatic mission.
