The theme of the retrospective of Berlinale-2014 is named

The retrospective of the 64th Berlin International Film Festival, which will be held from 6 to February 16, 2014, will be dedicated to the work of operators in cinema with light.

The retrospective will introduce the audience to different types of light compositions in different genres and in different periods of movie historia with examples of Japanese, American and European paintings, Proficinema reports.

In total, 40 dumb and sound films of different directions, including the military and Japanese historical genre of Dadaigeki, will be shown within the framework of the retrospective.

“We admire such films as Rasomon Akira Kurosawa, but for the most part the names of illuminators and operators, who, in the Commonwealth with the director, create these incredible worlds from light and shadow, are not known to us. In 2014, we will show these iconic films to the public. For the second time, the German cinema will oversee the retrospective of Berlinale together with the Museum of Modern Art of New York. We are glad that the program will also be shown in America, ”commented the results of work on the program, director of Berlinale Diter Cossle.

The starting point of the retrospective was the publication of Daisuke Miyao, professor at the University of Oregon, “Aesthetics of Shadow. Light and Japanese cinema ”(2013). “The study of Daisuke Miyao, who looked deeply into the little -studied history of Japanese cinema, struck us so much that we decided to oversee the program together,” says Rainer Roter, the head of the program and the artistic director of the German cinema. - We are grateful to him for the proposal, to make several prime miners of cult Japanese paintings within the festival. For example, the musical "singing birds" ( Oshidori Utagassen , 1939) directed by Masakhiro Makino.
