John Tavener died

Today, November 12, after a serious illness, British composer John Tavener died.

John Tavener was born in London in 1944, studied at the Royal Academy of Music. A work that attracted the public attention to the young composer was the Kit oratorio based on the book of the Prophet Jonah, which was performed in 1968 at its first concert, the London Symphony.

From his youth, Tavener showed great interest in Russian culture and Orthodoxy, in 1977 he accepted the baptism of Metropolitan Anthony of Sourozh.

Among the most famous works of the composer “Requiem of Akhmatova” for Soprano, Bas and Orchestra (1980), Khoral “Lamb” to the verses of William Blake (1982), “Pokrov of the Blessed Virgin” for the cello and string orchestra (1988), the opera “Maria Egyptian” (1991). “Song for Athena” (1993), composed to the death of the British actress Athena Ariades, was also performed at the funeral of Princess Diana.

One of John Taverns was “The Death of Ivan Ilyich” (the premiere took place in the summer of 2013 at the Manchester festival).

John Tavener is considered one of the main British composers of the 20th century. Grammy winner and other musical awards, in 2000 it was built into knightly dignity.
