Today, November 12, the curator of the IV Moscow International Biennale of Young Art was announced, which will be held from June 26 to August 10, 2014. They became the British art critic David Elliot.
According to RIA Novosti , at a press conference in the Moscow Documentary Cinema Center, Elliot said that Biennale's theme-“Dreaming Time” is inspired by the famous speech of Martin Luther King in 1963, in which there is a phrase “I have a dream”.
“Maybe the dreams that people had in the 1960s did not fully realize, how they hoped, but since then many events have occurred. - said the curator. - We received the idea of civil rights, a market economy originated. Now we see that the social and economic structures that have come out of that time are already outdated and sometimes even destructive. What will replace them? Now the decision does not lie in the plane of revolutions, it is more subtle and detailed. Good art can expose the unexpected aspects of relations and truth. It requires the artist of positioning and giving a view of the future - the opportunity to see, analyze, survive and dream. ”
The main project of the Biennale of young art will be shown in the Moscow Museum, where educational and children's programs will also be presented. Biennale strategic projects will be held at the venues of the organizers of the project - the State Center for Contemporary Art (GCSI) and the Moscow Museum of Modern Art (MMSI).
Participants in the main project of Biennale will be selected according to the results of the submitted applications, the reception of which has already begun and last until January 30.
David Elliot (b. 1949) was a member of the British Art Council, director of museums of contemporary art in Oxford, Stockholm, Tokyo and Stmabul, curator of the 17th Sydney Biennale (2010).
In the 90s, Elliot organized the exhibition “Art and Power” , dedicated to the relationship of art with the totalitarian regimes of Europe. In 2011, his New York exhibition "BYE BYE KITTY !!! Between Heaven and Hell in Contemporary Japanese Art " The International Association of Art Critics ( AAICA ) called the best exhibition of the year in non -profit space.
In 2012, Elliot was a curator of the first Kyiv Biennale of Contemporary Art (Arsenal-2012) with a budget of 38 million hryvnias (more than $ 4.6 million). By the time the opening was opened, the exposition at the Mistetsk Arsenal was not fully mounted, and it was not easy for visitors to understand how Vedomosti wrote, “where the garbage was installed and where the object was assembled, it was ready or still packed.”
Nobody blamed for the organizational miscalculations of the British curator. At the same time, according to the curator Maria Khrushchak ( LB.ua ), "for the same money to form the main exposition, one could invite someone else who is more versed in Ukrainian contemporary art."
