Some models of "smart" TVs of LG production collect information about the audience preferences of the user and send it to the servers of the company, writes The Syndey Morning Held . At the beginning of the week, one of the owners of such a TV wrote on his blog - the British IT consultant Jason Huntley.
According to Inopressa.ru , at first Huntley was alerted by the advertisement that appeared on the main screen of its device, says Ben Grabb correspondent. Then he caught his eye a video describing the integrated function of advertising targeting (Smart Ad). As a result, he found in the TV menu the option “View information collection”, which was on the default. However, having analyzed the traffic of his home network, Huntley found out that the data is sent regardless of whether this option is activated or not.
After the IT consultant spoke about his discovery on his blog, other users began to report similar observations. Among them were those who did not find signs of secret collection of information, and one owner of a “smart” TV said that his device was updated, in connection with which he was offered to approve the new rules for protecting personal data.
“There is no getting away from advertising, but I was angry that I paid more than 500 pounds for TV, paid for broadband Internet access, and LG considers myself the right to assign all this to show me advertising,” Huntley explained his position. According to Syndey Morning Herald and BBC, the investigation of the Commissioner is already conducted by the Kingdom of the United Kingdom and the Australian division of LG.
Similar vulnerabilities in modern technology are not uncommon, the publication notes, and “Smart TVs are stupid in matters of information and security protection. So, engineers Aaron Grattafyori and Josh Yavor recently demonstrated how to remotely hack the “smart” TV from Samsung 2012 release.
