On November 22, the head of the Duma Committee on Family, Women and Children, Elena Mizulina, supported by a number of fellow deputies, proposed that the preamble to the Constitution of the Russian Federation include the thesis that Orthodoxy is the basis of Russia's national and cultural identity.

In the civilized world, the relationship between the state and the church is regulated on the basis of the constitution. In all civilized countries, the church is separated from the state, and this was a great achievement of democracy. Today, in Italy, and in Germany, and in England, the states are secular. Only in some eastern countries, as in Iran, there are such forms of relations between the state and the church, in which this separation does not exist.

The civilizational movement goes precisely in the direction of the parallel coexistence of church and state; reversal is extremely detrimental. Not to mention that it is hardly possible. Although in our country a lot of the impossible is possible.

We are now not just going backwards. We talk about it out loud. And they say - from the stands of the State Duma. And it amazes me.

There are some things that are even indecent to say today. On the other hand, there are also talks about the restoration of the monarchy - there are such lovers.

What's happening? It seems to me that there is a catastrophe of consciousness. Unfortunately, it takes place not in marginal areas, but in the State Duma. This is primarily ridiculous, but also dangerous. It seems that we live in the space of Saltykov-Shchedrin.

Just today I was listening to a report on the development of the religious code of the Russian Federation. It was made by the professor of the Higher School of Economics Svyatoslav Kaspe. This report is a preparation of a document, which, perhaps, will someday be adopted, on the regulation of relations between the state, the church and civil society. The time has come. And it was very interesting to see how different community groups reacted to this report. Representatives of the Orthodox Church issued a statement that everything is in order, nothing needs to be changed, everything is going great. No wonder - with such powerful funding from the state budget, which the Russian Orthodox Church receives, there is no point in changing anything. Then a rabbi spoke - from the Reformed branch of Judaism. It was an absolutely comic performance, which should not be considered as a serious conversation. The last to speak was the representative of the Islamic world, and he was the only speaker who adequately responded to the report. It was clear that he heard the proposal and took it as a problem, as a topic for discussion.

The proposal to create a religious state in Russia, like the proposal to create an original symphony of Orthodoxy and democracy, leads us into the Middle Ages. This may be followed by a proposal to move the capital to Constantinople and burn all dissidents. Forestry in our country has fallen into disrepair over the past decades, but I think there will be firewood for the fires.
