id Software founder John Carmack has finally left the studio. Eurogamer reports this with reference to studio director Tim Willits.

As Willits said in a statement, Carmack left because he is now more interested in creating other projects rather than developing id Software games. The studio director also assured that Carmack's final resignation will not affect the studio's projects, since his work on the id 5 engine and other technologies necessary for creating games has now been completed.

Carmack himself, commenting on his resignation, tweeted that “it’s probably for the best.” As the developer explained, he wanted to stay at id Software as a technical advisor, but was unable to because it was difficult for him to focus on several projects at the same time.

John Carmack has served as senior director of technology at Oculus VR, which produces the Oculus Rift headset, since August 2013. However, it was previously reported that he does not intend to leave id Software yet and is going to combine work at Oculus VR and cooperation with the studio.

John Carmack founded id Software with Adrian Carmack, John Romero and Tom Hall in 1991. The studio is best known for producing the Doom and Quake shooter series. Its latest game is the post-apocalyptic action game Rage, which went on sale in 2011. The company is currently working on a new version of the game Doom 4. The developers decided to completely remake the game, which has been in development for more than five years, since the previous version did not seem to be of sufficient quality. The release date for the updated Doom 4 is still unknown.
