Correctional colony No. 2 is considered one of the best. It is located within the city, on the left is a park, on the right is the Avtozavodsky court of Nizhny Novgorod, the residential quarter, and the new building.
They say that in the mornings and evenings, barking is heard from IK. These are not animals. This is we - convicted persons built for checking "five people" - we welcome the administration. Responsible for the system commands “Attention!” Loudly, the rest are picked up with a powerful choir “Health!”. Here they are taught politeness. “To be polite among themselves and in handling the personnel of the IU” - paragraph No. 8 of the internal regulations.
One check lasts at least half an hour. Women stand on it in any weather, except for pouring rain. Most of the year - shifting from foot to foot from the cold and wind. The official winter shoes are made of a material resembling an adhesive in one layer. For insulation of the sole, convicts use female gaskets from free hygienic sets. Unknown (but cursed by all) a reason that does not allow the administration to recalculate by detachments.
The word "hut" is not loved here, but these "houses" are not called dormitories. They say: "I’ll go to my detachment." Convicts in Russian colonies live in detachments. IK-2, of course, is no exception. The main premises of the detachment are a section where two -story iron beds stand in several long rows. The personal space of the woman “legally” is compressed to three square meters: this is approximately the width of the bed plus the width of the aisle until the next. “But actually, the personal house is left,-such an answer can be heard from employees. - And here - everything is public. " Basins, for example, public. In several detachments, they are a stone elevation with a row of holes, the distance between which does not exceed 20 cm. Women who have squeezed the need for each other for years, having touched each other with their feet and waiting for their turn to the toilet, - the picture is not too reminiscent of “sophistication and sophistication”, which can be read on the website of the Nizhny Novgorod Gufsin.
How a person is turned into a slave
“Every convicted of imprisonment is obliged to work in places and work determined by the administration of correctional institutions” - employees of the system know and mention this excerpt from 103 articles with pleasure. Only two documents are needed to turn a person into a slave: his own statement, which begins with the words: “I ask you to accept me ...”, and the order of the head of the zone to enroll on work. There is no talk of voluntary writing statements: they will remind in time that "every convict must work ...". There is no need to conclude labor contracts, to familiarize yourself with how many hours it is necessary to work and how many convicts will receive is also not required. From quarantine, a woman is distributed into a detachment and a few days later stands on a “divorce in the industrial zone” (then, there is, she has already been determined in one of the brigades that work in the New Times).
“Bred” to work on the lists, which are called “crafts”. They are written for every day. They take it off in the same way, this is called "rent". Removing/divorce is an ordinary procedure, everyone who works on the industrial is passing through it. IK-2 has a video camera that fixes the process: a long system of frozen women in the same green coats enters the open iron gates, behind which is officially called the center of labor adaptation (CTU). On the gates of the “industrial zone” sign, in the ranks they say: “Yes, so that this industry is finally burned!”, In the meantime, the crows, meanwhile, scatter loudly along the roofs of the workshops. And so 6 days a week.
The sewing workshop No. 2 is an actually impatient room with an exhaust that goes to a bunch of manure, located 5-7 meters from it. In the summer, women experience difficulties in the process of sewing due to the abundance of flies, smell and roofs scurrying underfoot. Paul fails, plaster crumbles, there are no protective fences on several machines, and a weak ground of wires on most. There is no running water: per 100 people - one crane, water from which does not flow, but is brought by buckets from the administrative building. The maximum that can be obtained for work in such conditions, fulfilling 140% of the norm is 1,500-2000 rubles. Workshop No. 2 will not see a single commission (most often they demonstrate indicative No. 1 and No. 25), the salary of seamstress there is 100-200 rubles.
Confirmation of the earnings and experience of convicts is the calculated sheet. The sheets are given to each employee in the hands. At first, everyone was extremely surprised that they worked 6 days a week, and only 5 or 6 per month were listed in the sheets of worked days. Asked the administration questions. But here, if you ask a lot of questions, the answer and the penalty serve as the answer. To be humiliated at the disciplinary commissions, and then sit in the penalty isolater-a single bag of single things without warm things, tea and cigarettes, few people want, and therefore questions fall away.
The work experience develops from the worked days. Women who worked for 3-4 years, when released, receive a certificate with experience for a year or less. There are frequent cases when the annual paid vacation was not given by law for several years, and the convicts said: “Work, otherwise you will still have a colonies,” they are destroyed, and they worked on the sheets for no more than 10 days a month.
What is work, for example, in a cutting workshop? Those who work there are easy to recognize by blue boots. If you look more carefully, the same color is on their hands and nails. This is a blue that flies along the workshop mixed with dust and oil due to the fact that ventilation works in the opposite direction. When I hear about this, it seems that the organizers of labor in the opposite direction have a brain, because work in this workshop is dangerous. On cutting-lented machines (RLM) or cutters, behind which women are standing all day (chairs are “not provided”) often burst reinstate sharp tapes, and if such a person shares, the outcome can be fatal. The ribbons are torn because fuses do not work. It would be strange if they worked on equipment, where the year of release was 1979. And women are put on these machines at all without preparation, put at night, put in case of insufficient light, in flying dust and blue, which is eaten into the skin. Labor in such conditions is estimated at 1000 rubles a month with all processing (half as much without them).
If you do not go for processing, then your attitude may change. They are punished by the fact that they do not sign an additional dream (2 hours on Sunday). Or because they do not give boiling water for drinking. Or by the fact that they refuse in the tokens: they go to the tokens to the toilet to the tokens, to leave the workshop without a token is considered a violation. Therefore, some celebrate the need for a bucket in a neighboring empty room.
Are the companies that conclude contracts with the colony are known?
For ordering for 500 insulated costumes for the Vladimir company Slavyanka (Tekstilprof LLC), a brigade of 50 people will pay 35,000 rubles. Half of this money is held by the colony (for food), so it comes out 300 rubles per month per person, and if there is a lawsuit that the convict must pay, then even less. To fulfill this order on time, at the end of November, convicts worked 14 hours a day.
For orders from CJSC “Trud”, for which plumbing clamps are made in IK-2, they can pay 30-35 rubles per month. For the same money, convicts carry out the assembly services for gift packages for the company Mir Gift Packaging LLC. There are calculated sheets with a salary of 2.5 rubles.
Most likely, the convicts do not produce anything at all on papers, and for years they only “provide services”, and therefore it costs so cheaply. Labor inspections do not care, but from here - from the zone - it seems that no labor inspections exist at all.
Team as a control tool
A system in which a person has long been accustomed to be humble, in which he not only learned to perfectly obey, but also knows at what moments his subordination is profitable to use, such a system can be maintained only by one - a team. The collective method of influence is used in the colony everywhere. In the industrial zone-a brigade where one convict-Brigadier is set to lead others, and in her duties approved by the head of the colony, it is included to report on all violations. In the detachments “obligated to report” they are numerical, and at the level of the colony such people are “firefighters” - those who formally monitor the position of the fire extinguisher, but in fact - the position of people.
I have an extreme bewilderment of the order in which the convict is employed by the “night day” and her work is to sit in the kitchen and make sure that the rest do not go along the detachment. How does this work contribute to correction? It turns out that the zone has funds to pay for such a “labor”, but they are not enough to buy equipment, and therefore the movers (women!) Carry bales with paper over 400 (!) Kg.
The dining room workers, whom I see every day and whose shift seems to last 16 hours, wear huge (80-100 kg) barrels with cabbage daily. The same barrels are unloaded from the trucks by manually women of all detachments, and this unloading is not even enrolled in the hours of households. “You do this for yourself,” comments the leadership of the colony.
But who will treat convicts after such work? Appeals to the medical unit of one woman ignored six months, as a result, she was taken to the hospital and removed the uterus. She found hepatitis acquired in the zone (!). The other woman has cirrhosis now due to interruptions in the use of HIV therapy. With a yellow face, yellow eyes, opening bleeding, she was taken to work in the industrial zone, and in the hospital they put it only after the arrival of the PMC and the free therapist.
Cases related to non -ordering of medical care. That is why everything is done so that the institution remains as closed as possible. Women know that if they begin to write complaints, their moral health will be at risk due to pressure. They say that before a large stage from Udmurtia was brought to IK-2, they were afraid to write even supervisory complaints about the verdict.
"Due you today, and tomorrow I will receive encouragement"
Recently, the governor of the region visited our colony. The day before, the plot of the mother and child’s house in IK-2 was removed and released. Everyone understands that the convicted mother, stubbornly repeating on the camera “we have a sanatorium”, is lying, and those who could not lie, were intimidated or locked. Ironically, the building in which the problematic convicts are locked during the arrival of the commissions is called the KVF-the cultural and educational part. And in the same place, where, under the pretext of calling, the administration is locked up “uncomfortable” people, in the evenings you can observe the queue from completely different convicts: this is waiting for a woman who have firmly embarked on the path of correction, those who recognized, remembered and began to respect the “norms, rules and traditions of the human dormitory” (see Article 9 of the PEC of the Russian Federation). Their attitude towards others briefly fits in the principle that Solzhenitsyn wrote about: "You die today, and I am tomorrow." More precisely, “you die today, and tomorrow I’ll get encouragement for this, and the day after tomorrow I’ll be free” - something like that sounds like this now. And by the way, it works.
And although they are rarely exempted to IK-2 ahead of schedule, and no one is called on the UDO in a timely manner, the queue in the rooms is long. After all, a person in his baseness does not crave freedom, but only to watch how the other will sink. Will he ask for help or endure silently. Here's what is encouraged here, this is, apparently, the most reliable "tradition of the human dormitory." Simple respect for those who hold the system are inaccessible.

Encouraging in convicted ability to betray, the regeneration of human in them is the preparation of soil for relapse. But in conditions where the convicted person is profitable property, and the goal prescribed in the law is “correction of convicts and the prevention of new crimes” has long been replaced by the goal of profit, the relapse is beneficial for everyone: police, courts, prison, zones.
