Prosthetics will be manufactured in the USA for Georgian disabled war veterans with Russia

US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland met with the Georgian leadership in Tbilisi. The diplomat assured her interlocutors of Washington’s continued support for Georgia’s “Euro-Atlantic aspirations,” and also once again expressed gratitude for its active participation in NATO’s Afghan operation.

The meeting between US Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland and President Giorgi Margvelashvili lasted more than an hour. The presidential administration reported that issues of “the development of bilateral relations and the prospects for Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic integration” were discussed. And the day before, Mr. Margvelashvili himself told the Georgian media that work was underway on his “possible visit to the United States, as well as the execution of an agreement on a free trade zone.” Presumably these topics also arose during the meeting.

According to the presidential administration, Giorgi Margvelashvili said during negotiations with Ms. Nuland that US support “will be especially important in the period before the signing of the Association Agreement with the EU,” the text of which was initialed at the recent Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius. Moreover, judging by the press release, this phrase was spoken in the context of “a discussion of Russian-Georgian relations and the situation in the occupied territories.”

Victoria Nuland also spoke with the new Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Garibashvili. Both meetings took place in the building of the State Chancellery of Georgia, where the offices of the president and prime minister of the country are located. There, a representative of the State Department took part in the opening of a special ramp for the disabled. Including for the military personnel of the Georgian contingent in Afghanistan, wounded during the operation of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).

"Wounded warriors! We salute your service for the good of your country!” - Ms. Nuland said, addressing the Georgian veterans of the ISAF operation participating in the ceremony. According to the American diplomat, “Georgian and American military personnel are fighting together to ensure world peace.” In addition, Victoria Nuland promised to strengthen financial assistance through USAID for “greater social protection of people with disabilities and their involvement in socio-political processes.”

According to Georgian Defense Minister Irakli Alasania, the guest from Washington promised to “step by step help” in the treatment of not only military personnel who carried out a mission within the framework of ISAF, but also those who became disabled “in the fight to protect the territorial integrity of Georgia.” In particular, it is planned to produce modern prostheses for them in the USA.
