1993 First elections to the Federal Assembly

20 years ago, on December 12, 1993, the first elections to the Federal Assembly - the new Russian parliament - and a referendum on the new Constitution of the Russian Federation were held. Since then, December 12 has been celebrated in Russia as Constitution Day.

Then the upper house of parliament, the Federation Council, was elected by universal suffrage in majoritarian districts - subjects of the Federation. In the elections to the State Duma on party lists, the victory of the LDPR became a sensation, receiving 22.9% of the vote and 59 mandates, while the pro-government Choice of Russia received only 15.5% of the vote, taking second place.
