Those who remain in Moscow on New Year's holidays, The New Times offers a small poster: what is worth watching in the cinema, theater and exhibition halls
People, animals and hobbits
On New Year's Eve, distributors release films on a large screen, which can assemble the maximum box office. The New Times represents the vacation hits

Let us leave the sequels of domestic comedies “Christmas tree-3” and “Love in the Bolshoi-3” behind the brackets. The author of these lines is forced to be sad to admit that he was trying, but is not able to defeat and renew such paintings, despite their obvious positive qualities, such as: good and even solid humor, positive morality and belief that living in our country is getting better, more and more fun.
Of the domestic vacation hits, however, we note, however, the next (fifth, seems) movie of the witty “quartet and” under the strange name “faster than rabbits”. The charming film of intelligent actors authors (Leonid Barats, Sergey Petreikov, Rostislav Khait, etc.).
But your humble servant loves primarily what has the right to be called the term “cinema”. And who is to blame if they still make a really good vacation movie in Hollywood? Three of the four films that will be discussed should appear on our screens on January 2. Another one - “The Hobbit: the Wasteland of Smuuga” - already (just) came out, but a special vacation rate is also made on it. He has a circulation of 2200 copies, and according to the intake of the distributors, he should remain among the leaders and in the post -day ten -day.
"The incredible life of Walter Mitty"
Director Ben Stiller
The genre mixture of comedy, melodramas and an adventure film based on the famous short story of James Turner, published in the legendary intellectual magazine The New Yorker in 1939. In the short story, it was about a man who is not too successful in life, but lives, like many, in the world of fantasies. In the film, the plot is immersed in modernity, and in the actual sociopolitical context: crisis, abbreviations, modernization, which requires human sacrifice and destroying the remains of living (non -membrane) creativity.
Your reviewer would never have suspected that he could be amazed at a picture made ultimately (when taking into account its many genres to one) in the form of a romantic comedy with the average comedian Ben Stiller in the main role. Yes, and shot by this very styller as a director.
But “Walter Mitty’s incredible life” is a really good movie. Of course, it also captivates the fact that it demonstrates a situation close and painful for any journalist: a sudden acceleration of a talented edition, which many of its employees gave all their lives, newly approved boys, the so -called effective managers who have no doubt in their right to dismiss, break through the knee, not know and despise everything that was before them.
These boys have their own anecdotal corporate culture, from which they are just dragging: in Walter Mitty, all, for example, wear not only jackets of one in one, but also the same short-cut beards.
The film is about the magnificent Life magazine. Stiller assures that this is not a real Life, but his logo in the film is genuine, and the printed version of the magazine was really eliminated-back in 2000. Stiller himself plays the head of the photo service, and this is also a iconic, because Life was valued primarily by life photo reports.
In the world, classical journalistic culture is destroyed. It is destroyed before our eyes. Ultimately, the film, with all his hohms - about our time, which is unfair to true professionals. People who gave birth to wonderful ideas, but in the era of abbreviations instantly became anyone. But the film is about that (this is also relevant in the era of mass uncertainty in the future) that a person has no right to give his hands, and also dream of his whole life. Otherwise, not long to die in an 80 dreamy 15-year offspring.
"Hobbit: Wasteful Smuuga"
Director Peter Jackson
In the early 2000s, the director and producer Peter Jackson year after year, strictly in December, released parts of the Lord of the Rings trilogy according to J. R.R. Tolkien. Each series lasted for three hours, and the latter - all three and a half. Now, after year, he clearly releases the Hobbit trilogy in December - the background of the Lord. And although as the book “Hobbit” much thinner than “Lord”, each series again lasts not three hours, but at least at least for three hours. After all, Jackson and his scriptwriters (including another rampant film fantaser and a lover of monsters Guillermo del Toro) added a lot of characters and situations to the film, most of which were found in the drafts and diaries of Tolkien.
Of course, for the public “hobbit” - all the same “lord”. The second series of “hobbit” that has now been released - consider a fifth of the movie cycle. But surprisingly: he does not bother. The film art, created by Jackson, still fascinates the grandeur, beauty of landscapes, the battles of heroes with all kinds of freaks and, by the way, elegant filmmaker humor. The second series is transitional. Heroes (thirteen gnomes, wizard Gandalf Gray and Hobbit Bilbo Baggins) have already encountered the main representatives of evil: a dragon Smauug and a necromancer, but it does not reach decisive contractions. By the way, Bilbo barely takes his legs from the dragon, who leads the Jesuit discussion with him. Since Bilbo depicts the newfangled television Watson Martin Freeman, and the dragon is voiced by the newfangled television Holmes Benedict Cumberbetch (we have been duplicated, but every competent viewer knows about the role of Cumberbethch), their fight takes up additional humor.
Here it would be possible to break the story of the “hobbit”, if not for an unexpected current detail. At some point, the characters fall into the lake city. For two episodes, they first find themselves among people (people are only one of the races in Tolkien’s books along with hobbits, gnomes, elves, orcs, trolls, etc.). It turns out that the social structure - precisely in people - is totalitarian. Let anecdotal. In the lake city is the cult of the personality of the burgomaster, who is ridiculously played by the famous English writer, actor and public figure Stephen Fry. Surprisingly, the miserable view of the town recalls the medieval settlement, where the action of Alexei Herman’s film “is difficult to be God” develops. Jackson could not see Herman’s film, but could easily stumble on the network on the frames from his set. Residents of the lake city, according to Jackson himself, are dressed like Siberian peasants from old films. The burgomaster-fry, condemning the subjects, says: “Give them free rein, they will create committees, make inquiries, look, will begin to talk about the elections.” There is a complete sensation (although it cannot be) that Jackson and Fry hint at our native and close.
"47 Ronins"
Director Karl Rinsch
The author of these lines always loved his colleagues and did not approve of those who in vain blamed the film critical community in their articles. Moreover, there is no community (although the critics guild exists). There are people who write about the cinema, and everyone has a different difficult relationship with each other.
The show “47 Ronins” for the Moscow press forced to change its own principles. Right from behind, some famous critics sat. From the second minute of viewing, they began to moan throughout the hall: “Stupidity! Cretinism! It is impossible to watch! Cinema for children! ABOUT!!! Now I will leave the hall! " If only one of them came out. So no - they looked, indignant, further.
Strange reaction. Yes, “47 Ronins” is a slightly childish spectacle (but any movie is slightly childish, unless this is Sokurov). But at the same time - maximum filmmaker.
This is a film adaptation of the famous legend about how in the XVIII, it seems, the century 47 former samurai, who became Ronins (that is, the shoga samurai who did not protect the owner), revenge on his powerful killer, contrary to the ban on the ruler of the halt. And they deserved for this all -Japanese glory, which still lasts. Moreover, after revenge, all 47 committed sippoku - ritual suicide. Honor and pride. Pride and honor.
This story has a lot of refraction in film and book culture. In the new "47 Ronins" the story is immersed in mysticism. But I really, really want to believe in real Japan of past centuries and that perfumes, witches, werewolves, dragons and even unicorns once lived there.
In fact, this is a film about the essence of Japanese culture and its important component - sacrifice. The current phrase also sounds in it - without them, it turned out, not a single perine -occasional film is complete: "If the crime remains unnecessary, the harmony of the world is broken." Like this. You get a lick. Truly in Japanese. We would think so in Russian.
Of course, this is Japanese culture, adapted for the world of Hollywood. But adapted neatly. Japanese culture, unlike Russian, conquers the world. Japanese history, battles in swords, the Samurai spirit becomes - even in Hollywood - are more and more popular. It is no longer necessary to explain to most readers and spectators what Ronin or Seppuka is (although we were rebuilt - explained). The most amazing thing is that Japanese actors become popular. The only acting concession to the world viewer in "47 Ronins" is Keanu Reeves in the title role.
"Wolf with Wall Street"
Director Martin Scorsese

Frame from the movie "Wolf with Wall Street"
The only New Year's films that failed to watch before signing this issue of The New Times. There was no traditional preliminary show of the film for the Moscow press yet. Yes, and the distributors always change the testimony. Perhaps the fact is that the film was drawn up. Skorsze loves epic film -released, but for more than four hours (the length of the original version of the picture) is too much. The “Wolf” had to be cut up to three hours, reducing the most frank scenes at the same time, so as not to get a harsh rolling rating. At the same time, the scenes deliberately reduced this way (the editor of the Scorsese Telm Shunmaker told The New York Times), so that the audience clearly realizes: here the authors clicked with scissors - and they themselves specified unimportant.
We have already talked about the essence of the film. He is about the cynical life of New York brokers. In the center is the fate of the real Jordan Belfort (once again plays the main role of Leonardo DiCaprio), who got rich at twenty, created a large company and quickly mired in all heavy sins - from financial scams to wild runs. Apparently, the genre of the film for Scorsese is not quite common. It seems that this is a satire on the customs of Wall Street. However, the elements of the satire were found at Scorsese before. They are in the “casino” (satire on the customs of Las Vegas) and “Glorious Guys” (satire for the customs of the mafia).
Whatever the film it turns out, watching it will be clearly interesting. Not only because Scorsese does not lose the directorial form. Not only because of DiCaprio, which is always good. But because this film ... Yes, again, relevant. Hollywood, after the crisis, is very picky to the thieves-multimillioneers, for whom profit is everything, and the country, peace, people are nothing. See the second part of Wall Street, the Risk limit (the film about what the crisis began-how the group of managers of a large company has collapsed for their own benefit) and even the Jasmine Woody Allen. A separate topic of these films is debauchery, accompanying a large dishonest money. You involuntarily think: when will we have films about real corruption and multi -billion dollar theft? One thing is clear: not earlier than on TV they will stop the advertising of Gazprom as our national property.
Hamlet is immortal
From theater observer The New Times: the main premieres of January

Scene from the play "Tram" desire "" Kolyada Theater "
"Dead Souls", Gogol Center. Stage, scenography and production of Kirill Serebrennikov. Composer Alexander Manotskov.
All roles in the play are performed by men. Chichikov - one Byron (USA) and Semyon Steinberg, box - Oleg Gushchin, Plyushkin - Alexey Devotchenko. Kirill Serebrennikov, in 2010, at the National Theater of Latvia (Riga) in Latvian, staged a performance on Dead Souls. The 2014 version is not a copy of the last performance, although it will remain magnificent zoongs and the main artistic solutions invented by the author.
"Hamlet-collage", theater of nations. The author and director Robert Lepage (Canada), the main performer is Evgeny Mironov. The debut of an outstanding Canadian director on the Moscow stage. The time of action was postponed in the 60s of the last century, the time of "Building". The main topics of the performance for the director of the director are spying, “the paranoid fear that you are watching you all the time”, incest as a possible explanation of the reflection and doubt of Hamlet, vanity as self -destruction. The main artistic image is a transformer cube, inside which Hamlet transforms into different heroes of the drama. The use of all possible recent multimedia technologies is determined by the genre of the performance - this is Hamlet in 3D.
Kant, Mayakovsky Theater. Director Mindaugas Karbauskis, play by Marus Ivashkevichyus, artist Sergey Barkhin. In the title role, Mikhail Filippov. According to the genre, this is a performance for 12 people and for 140 spectators. Spectators and actors are inside the huge decoration of the amphitheater built on the stage. The play takes place in November 1784 in the house of the great philosopher. “Criticism of pure reason” does not shy away from either emotions or humor.
"Number 13d", Moscow Art Theater named after Chekhov. Director Vladimir Mashkov, play by Ray Kuni (translation by Mikhail Mishin). The new version of the long -term hit of the Number 13 Theater, invented by Vladimir Mashkov in 2001 and for ten years invariably gathered a full house. A rare case when the boulevard comedy of the provisions goes into the category of high art thanks to acting excitement and directorial inspiration. The new version of the performance is not only a new cast, but also an attempt to comply with today's time - with its rapid speeds, information oversaturation and technological revolutions.
"Hamlet", Theater named after Ermolova. Director Valery Sarkisov, the translation of Andrei Chernov, in the title role of the very young 23-year-old Alexander Petrov, the recent graduate of GITIS, whom Oleg Menshikov, Hudruck Oleg Menshikov, considers the discovery of theatrical Moscow. Valery Sarkisov is a director with vast experience, including Shakespearean. The new Ermolovsky Theater has not yet gained its face, so each prime minister is expected with particular interest - what if Hamlet will become an application to his own theatrical style, his own handwriting?
It is worth noting that this is the third in a row Hamlet on the Moscow stage-after the Gogol Center and theater of nations.
Touring "Kolyada Theater" (Yekaterinburg) on the stage of the theater center "On the Holy" . Traditional January tour of the most famous Ural Theater under the leadership of the director and playwright Nikolai Kolyada. In eleven days (January 15–26), the theater will play fifteen performances, among which perennial hits beloved by the Moscow audience (“Hamlet”, “Boris Godunov”, “Marriage”, “The Cherry Garden”, “The Tram of Desire”), and the last premieres, which Muscovites will see for the first time: “Dead Souls” and “We Play Moliere”.
Four floors of color
Moscow Exhibition at the end of December-January: bright southern colors, Perm antiquities, a harsh Soviet-Anti-Soviet style, brilliant shocking

Mikhail Groman. "Russian sky", 2008
The exhibition of the Dutch schedule Mauritsa Cornelis Escher (1898–1972) in the Moscow Museum of Contemporary Art is one of the most discussed events in Moscow in Moscow. Everyone loves Escher - both those to whom he leaked under the iron curtain, and those who did not find any curtain and doubt that he existed. Esher is elegant, it can be examined for a long time, surprised by all the new and new finds - his own and him. At the exhibition, you can see the most textbook engravings of Escher and rare archival materials from the M.K. Escher in the Netherlands - only more than 100 works related to three different periods of his work. It’s good to come here with the children, and to whom the intricate optical illusions give true pleasure. It will be interesting to the experts in mathematics, not to mention those who simply love graphics.
Until February 9
A huge (on four floors!) Retrospective exhibition of Mikhail Grobman, the most prominent representative of the Russian avant-garde of the 60s, in the halls of MMOMA in Ermolaevsky Lane: bright southern colors, vital humor-four floors of color. The exposition is made in such a way that it is suitable for both the “thaw”, and the collectors of national self-determination, and jokers, capable of evaluating the sweeping-guado mausoleum of Solzhenitsyn and Trotsky. Comban sings its Jewry (the exhibition is held as part of the celebration of the 65th anniversary of the Israeli state), and is laugh at it. Book cover covers mocking the prose of socialist realism deserve special attention: it seems like ordinary waste paper headings about five -year plan and shock labor, but you read - these are young builders of communism build a “female idol to put it in the bed ...”
Until January 26

| Victor Popkov. North Chapel, 1972 |
The exhibition of Viktor Popkov (1932–1974) in the Gallery of Cerenettes on the Prechistenka. Viktor Popkov - the most, perhaps, the famous representative of the “harsh style” - grabbed the painting from the clutches of the Soviet positivist discourse: being quite loyal, he was not false, never hypocrite. He was socially successful, but at the same time loved - both spectators and colleagues. In February, the exhibition will leave for Venice, then he will migrate to London. It is necessary to hurry ... At a chronological distance from the paintings, a husk of ideology flies, and expression and painting remain.
The Christian antiquities of the Perm Territory were brought to the capital: in the historical museum it will be possible to see a tangible and some kind of home magic of the Perm wooden sculpture. The “Angel with a pipe” from the village of Shherya looks expectantly, “Blessing Savaof” stands in the clouds, as in potato tubers.
Until March 9
Not beloved by everyone of the British artist, entrepreneur and collector Damien Hurst brought to Moscow his collection of contemporary art: Banksy, Picasso, Jacketti, Kuns. An exhibition called “Freedom is not genius” in the Multimedia Art Museum is a holiday for the adherers of everything bright, brilliant and relevant. Bring children, they will appreciate! At the same time, the eyes will open their eyes with blinded parents.
Until February 2
