A suicide bomber blew himself up at an army recruiting station in the Iraqi capital Baghdad. The terrorist attack killed 13 people and injured more than 30, Reuters reports , citing police data.

The incident took place at Baghdad's small Muthanna airfield, which is used by the army. The bomb was detonated in a line of volunteers who were about to apply to join the armed forces.

No one has yet claimed responsibility for the terrorist attack. According to news agencies, the Sunni group “Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant” may be behind him.

On the eve of the attack, on January 8, the country's Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki promised a quick victory over the rebels from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, who captured several cities in Anbar province. Authorities had previously called for volunteers to take part in the campaign against Sunni militants.

The cities of Fallujah and Ramadi, predominantly populated by Sunnis, have been under the control of militants from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant since the beginning of January 2014. Troops of the government, which is predominantly Shiite, have so far failed to drive the rebels out of the cities.

Religious and political divisions are the cause of numerous terrorist attacks and attacks in Iraq. More than six thousand people became victims of such incidents in 2013.
