Cinema in the traditional sense to which we are accustomed is coming to its end, says Martin Scorsese. The 71-year-old director outlined his thoughts on the future of the industry in an open letter to his 14-year-old daughter Francesca, which was published by the Italian publication l'Espresso.

Cinema and the film business are currently at a crossroads, the director believes: “audiovisual entertainment and what we used to call cinema - which was created by individuals - have taken different paths of development.” “In the future, you will see less and less of what we agree to consider cinema in large multiplexes, and more and more in small theaters, on the Internet, and also, obviously, in places and circumstances that I cannot predict,” Scorsese writes to his daughter.

At the same time, the creator of “Taxi Driver” and “Raging Bull” believes that cinema has a bright future, “because for the first time in the history of this art, films can actually be made for very little money.” At the same time, according to Scorsese, with all the attention to the technical revolution, it is important for the director to remember: “it’s not the tools that make the film, it’s you who makes the film.”

As the director writes, if his friend and teacher John Cassavetes were alive today, he would use the most available technical means, but would not change his professional principles: you must devote yourself completely to your work. If previously the main task for a director was to protect the film from compromise and emasculation, now it is to fight the temptation to let the creative process take its course, Scorsese believes.

The filmmaker listed directors who, in his opinion, are still creating real cinema: these are Wes Anderson, Richard Linklater, David Fincher, Alexander Payne, the Coen brothers, James Gray, Paul Thomas Anderson, as well as unnamed creators from France, South Korea, England , Japan and Africa.

In 2013, other prominent American directors, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas, announced the imminent end of the modern film industry. In their opinion, Hollywood is facing collapse after the inevitable failure at the box office of several blockbusters with huge budgets. In these conditions, the future of creative cinema, according to Spielberg and Lucas, lies in new means of distribution: cable channels or cinemas with a modified distribution scheme.
