In 1988, Abbado established the Vin Modern festival in Vienna, in 1991 - the international competition of composers in Vienna, in 1992, together with Natalia Gutman, founded the Berlin Meeting Festival of Chamber Music. In 1994, Abbado became the artistic director of the Salzburg Easter Festival.
