Nora Gal Awards open the season

Today, January 20, the Nora Gal Award, awarded for translation of short prose from English, opens the nominations.

The Nora Gal Award was established in 2012 by the centenary of an outstanding Russian translator. Along with novels and stories-among which are so significant as the “death of the hero” by Richard Oldington, “Ship of Fools” Katherine Anne Porter, “On the shore” of Neville Shyuta, “Singing in the Ternate” Colin McCalllow, “Outdoor” Albert Camus, “Little Prince” Antoine de Saint-Exupery,-Nora Gal turned throughout her life. To a small form, giving a decisive preference to the literature of the latest time.

Among the more than a hundred stories and short stories she translated - the classic texts of W. S. Maugham and J. D. Salinger, Short Prose by Arthur Conan Doyle, Oldos Haxli, E. M. Forster, J. K. Outs, Susan Umbar, as well as masterpieces of the masters of a fantastic story - Ray Bradbury, Roberte Shekly, Cliforly Saimaka, Ursula Le Guin.

Following the preferences of the Nora Gal, the media founders-the heirs of the translator, the literary critic and editor Edward Kuzmin, the literary figure and translator Dmitry Kuzmin-announced their desire to support translators addressing stories and other short prose of the XX-XXI centuries.

At the first award of the prize, 73 works claimed. The first laureate of the Nora Gal Prize was Evgenia Kanishcheva (Simferopol) for the translation of the tale of Rudyard Kipling “Where did the leopard have the spot”, it was nominated by the Oktopus publishing house, which printed the translation in the Kipling collection “Tale Word in Word”. The special prize “For the solution of a special translation problem” was awarded to Maxim Nemtsov (Moscow) for the unpublished translation of the story of Nelson Olgren “He-bo”.

In 2013, the founders of the award, having examined the 31 nominated translation, decided not to award the first prize, but they awarded with special prizes of three translators: the Award “For the Expressiveness of the Russian Language” was received by Nadezhda Kazantseva (Yekaterinburg), which translated the story of Steven Vincent Bene “Crying Virgins”, the award “For the closeness of the original” went to Zingeer (Jerusalem), who presented a translation of the short story by Dennis Silnya “Molino and Kostigan”, and Tatyana Borovikova (Toronto) was awarded a special prize for the translation of children's literature for the book of Kyartan Zartt “Agatha Voroby and Flying Head” (Publishing House “Clover Media Groups”).

In 2014, the prize award does not change: publishers, periodicals, creative organizations, scientific and educational institutions, as well as translators themselves can nominate one translation of a story or another short prose work written in the XX-XXI centuries; The translation should be first published in 2013 or not published.

The nomination ends on March 15, the name of the laureate will be named in April, since it was in April that Nora Gal was born.
