On the night of Tuesday, January 21, security forces broke the catapult built by protesters on Monday on Grushevsky Street in Kiev, RIA Novosti reports .

The catapult was destroyed during another clash between law enforcement officers and demonstrators. Shortly before the skirmish began, demonstrators dragged the catapult closer to the defense line. According to the agency's correspondent, at night, special forces with shields began to push back the demonstrators, shooting at them with stun grenades and throwing stones. After the destruction of the catapult, law enforcement officers retreated. After some time, the demonstrators began to advance along the entire width of the street, and the police retreated to their previous positions behind the burned vehicles.

Berkut fighters also tried to storm the barricades erected by activists on Grushevsky Street, ITAR-TASS reports . Several security forces began to dismantle the barricades, but then the fighters retreated to their previous positions several tens of meters from the fence.

Clashes on Grushevsky Street began on Sunday, January 19, when, after the eighth People's Assembly against the current Ukrainian government on the Maidan, a group of protesters headed towards the government quarter. The protesters were going to picket the Verkhovna Rada demanding the repeal of the laws adopted on January 16, providing for tougher penalties for participation in unauthorized actions, slander, etc. The police blocked the approach to the Rada, after which riots and clashes between fighters and protesters began on Grushevsky Street. According to the Kyiv administration, more than 100 people were injured on Monday night. 31 riot participants were detained, and criminal proceedings were initiated against nine.

The laws of Ukraine, adopted by the Verkhovna Rada on January 16 and causing protest among the opposition and the public, were published in the electronic version of the parliament's newspaper "Voice of Ukraine" in the issue for Tuesday, January 21.
