Dzerzhinsky will not return to Lubyanka

Today, February 11, the commission on monumental art under the Moscow City Duma decided not to return the monument to Felix Dzerzhinsky to Lubyanskaya Square.

“The monument is inappropriate to restore at present, because it is more a political issue that society can split. Unanimously, ” RIA Novosti quotes the chairman of the commission Lev Lavrenov.

The monument to the founder of the Cheka according to the project of sculptor Yevgeny Vuchetich was installed in 1958 opposite the main building of the KGB of the USSR on the square, which then bore the name of Dzerzhinsky. Now the monument is located in the Museon Art Park at the Central House of Artists, where it was postponed by the resolution of the Moscow City Council on August 22, 1991 after an unsuccessful attempt by the State Emergency Committee. In 2008, the monument was transferred to Moscow.

In October, it became known that the monument to Felix Dzerzhinsky was included in the list of heels, the restoration of which is planned by the Moskom Expertise. The idea of ​​the return of Dzerzhinsky to Lubyanka was supported in the Moscow City Duma and sharply condemned in the Russian Orthodox Church.

According to the head of the department of artistic heritage of the Department of Culture of Moscow Sergey Polinkin, the monument must be left in the same place - in the Museon Park.

“A large number of letters on this issue are received by the Department. The number of letters for Dzerzhinsky is about the same as against return. This suggests that in Moscow society there was no consensus on the need to make a decision right now. This can split society. This is a political problem. It should be resolved at a high level, ”said Polunkin.

Another member of the commission, art critic, Valery Perfiliev noted that the return of the monument is the return of the symbol. “This question must be postponed. When there will be another generation that will forget, who is Dzerzhinsky, then this question can be posed, ”he said.

Since 2000, the commission on monumental art under the Moscow City Duma has considered the issue of restoring the monument five times and invariably issued a decision about its inappropriateness, since it could cause “unwanted tension” in society.
