The Russian Union of Afghanistan Veterans considers it necessary to revise the negative assessment of the war in this country given by the II Congress of People's Deputies of the USSR in December 1989. With the corresponding request, veterans intend to contact President Vladimir Putin. This was reported by Interfax with reference to the State Duma deputy from United Russia, a participant in the war in Afghanistan Franz Klintsevich.

Uneneros called the assessment of this war as a failed adventure given by the congress "politically and legally insolvent." He added that, according to veterans, such an assessment turned into a reduction in their social guarantees.

The II Congress of People's Deputies in his resolution condemned the Afghan war from a political and moral point of view. The Soviet press at that time sharply criticized the invasion of Afghanistan.

The USSR war in Afghanistan lasted from December 1979 to February 1989. According to various estimates, from 15 to 26 thousand Soviet soldiers died in it, another 54 thousand were injured.
