The threat of eruption hung over the eastern part of the Indonesian island of Java - the most densely populated in the world. The highest level of danger is assigned to the Kelud Vulcan today about midnight.
“Volcanic tremors foreshadowing the eruption reached a threatening force, and at 21:15 (local time) we raised the level of threat to the maximum value,” ITAR -TASS reports with reference to the director of the National Agency of Volcanology and Geological Catastrophes of Muhammad Hendrasto.
In a radius of ten kilometers from the Kelud volcano, which is located about 90 kilometers from the second largest in the city of Indonesia - Surabay, about 350 thousand people live. They are ordered to immediately evacuate to safe places. The residents covered by panic right in the middle of the night began to arrive at evacuation centers, the local news agency Antara reports.
More than 200 thousand people left their homes. The volcano has already threw a huge number of ash into the atmosphere twice. It was found in his homes even residents of the city of Surabay, lying 130 km from the volcano, writes the Russian BBC service .
The three main airports of the Central Java - Surabia, Solo and Jokyakart - closed due to fears for the engines of aircraft and a decrease in visibility.
Kelud, 1731 m high, is one of the most active volcanoes of the Indonesian archipelago, numbering about 18 thousand islands. Keloud in Javanese means "sweeping everything in its path." Since 1311, the volcano, in the crater of which a whole lake has splashed, erupted 29 times, while repeatedly, he really swept everything in his path, leaving thousands of victims.
The most powerful eruption of Keluda occurred in 1568, then about 10 thousand Javans died. About five thousand islanders died in 1919, when boiling water from the lake spilled out of the crater on the slopes of the mountain. For the last time, the volcano "woke up" in 1998, when he deprived 35 people.
Indonesians literally live on volcanoes - there are about 500 on the archipelago, and more than 130 of them are valid. The eruptions at the moment covered 19 of the most active volcanoes of the Indonesian archipelago.
Over 400 years of meteorological observations on 76 Indonesian volcanoes, more than 1.2 thousand eruptions occurred. It is estimated that in total, they claimed the lives of more than 150 thousand people.
Due to the many volcanoes located on the Indonesian islands and in Oceania, scientists call this unstable part of the oceans the Pacific Ring.
Tectonic break has a circle of about 40 thousand km. It takes place under the islands of New Guinea, Hawaiian, Indonesian and Philippine, the Pacific coast of North America and Japan. Every year, up to 90% of all seismic and volcanic events of the planet occur inside the fiery ring.
