Protests against tenge devaluation continue in Kazakhstan

In the center of Alma-Ata on Sunday morning, a protest against the devaluation of tenge continued. The protesters gathered on the Republic Square near the Independence Monument, Interfax reports.

In total, about 30 people participate in the action, but the number of protesters increases. The agency also reports the detention of three activists by police officers who are watching the rally. It is noted that the Independence Monument is now closed for repairs.

Sunday protests were a continuation of the action, which began in Alma-Ata on February 15. Then about 100 people entered the streets of the city, which passed a procession from the Palace of the Republic to the Alma-Ata administration. During the action, the police detained about 30 people, most of whom were appointed administrative fines.

The leadership of Kazakhstan announced the devaluation of Tenge on February 11, calling as the reason for the speculation of banks, the weakening of the Russian ruble and the US foreign exchange policy. The national currency fell by almost 20 percent of the dollar, which led to the closure of shops and exchange points throughout the country. The first protests against the decision of the authorities took place on February 12 at the building of the National Bank in Alma-Ata.
