The Chancellor said that she would discuss with France President Francois Hollande the possibility of creating a European communication network so that emails and other data do not automatically pass through the United States. Reuters sources indicate that France gave preliminary consent.

In her weekly video message, Merkel said that she would raise this issue on Wednesday at a meeting with the president of France.
