In the Museum of Perez in Miami, the artist broke the vase of the work of Ai Weiwei worth a million dollars. So he protested against the fact that mainly foreign art is exhibited in the museum.
According to the Associated Press , 51-year-old resident Miami Maximo Camineuro was arrested, he was charged with criminal damage. The maximum punishment may be five years of prison, since the amount of damage caused exceeds $ 1000.
The museum guard said that the artist approached the table, on which there were vases painted by Ai Wewei, and took one of them in his hands. When he was asked to put the vase in place, he broke it on the floor.
According to Camineuro, he wanted to express indignation at the policy of the museum, which “shows only the works of foreign artists” and ignores the locals.
The exhibition of Ai Weiwei opened at the Perez Museum in December last year. Behind the table with vases, painted by the Chinese artist in bright colors, there are photos with his performance, during which Ai Weiwei breaks the vase of the Han dynasty.
“We deeply respect the artist’s right to self -expression. - It says in the statement of the administration of the museum, distributed on Monday, February 17. “But in this case there is an act of vandalism and disrespect for another artist and his work.”
The administration emphasizes that the next large project of the Perez Museum will be an exhibition of the artist from Miami Eduar Duval-Carrye.
