The defenders were convinced what happened during the opposition campaign agreed with the city authorities: the police cordon chain stood differently, which was stipulated during the coordination with the organizers of the action, which led to the tackle and breakthrough of the cordon: a crowd of demonstrators buried in the police and could not go into the rally zone. The police, as witnesses of defense confirmed in court, acted unreasonably cruelly, detained for no explanation, the participants in the action were forced to defend themselves.

Lawyer Sergei Panchenko , protecting Stepan Zimina, notes that the verdict can be unpredictable due to the political background in the "swamp business":

- The judge has what the law calls "internal conviction", and in the domestic sense - a conscience. And it works either this way or otherwise. Nikishin generally enjoys a reputation as a person who does not like when she is prompted by certain decisions and when she is pushed to certain actions. This is known to everyone who dealt with her. There is such an unspoken tradition in the court: always slightly retreat from the request of prosecutors. But I recall the Previous "Swamp case" in which I participated: there, the state prosecutor partially refused the prosecution, then the court partially excluded other episodes of the prosecution. However, the total term, which was scheduled for the defendant 3.5-4 years, was much more than it could be. They were accused under the article "Hooliganism". If it were an ordinary "hooligan", perfect not by the National Boodles, then they would have escaped in a shorter period than it happened then. I do not presume to predict what will happen, but I have a precedent in practice. In the same articles, in case with political subtext, the punishment is more severe. What will happen in this particular case, I do not know, I would be glad to make mistakes.

According to Sergei Panchenko, there are already enough formal reasons for the abolition of the sentence - no matter what he may be, but the main violation, according to the lawyer, is that people are judged "on a fictional prosecution":

- The imputation of 212 articles initially gives a political shade to this process, and it was given not to the defendants of their position, but by state authorities. Адвокат Дмитрий Аграновский , защищающий Ярослава Белоусова, отмечает, что срок содержания под стражей обвиняемых истекает 24 февраля. По мнению адвоката, это означает, что в этот день их должны освободить из следственных изоляторов – до вступления приговора в законную силу, поскольку, как отмечает адвокат, в приговоре суд не может продлить меру пресечения, для этого необходимо возобновить судебное следствие. Аграновский обратился к уполномоченному по правам человека Владимиру Лукину с просьбой принять меры для соблюдения прав подсудимых.
