Rada changed the status of the Russian language

On Sunday, February 23, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine canceled the law on the basics of state language policy.

As RIA Novosti reports, 232 deputies voted for this decision.

The Law on the Fundamentals of State Language Policy entered into force on August 10, 2012. Under this law, the Russian language received the status of regional where it is native to at least 10% of the population-at 13 of 27 administrative-territorial units of Ukraine.

According to the head of the Fatherland faction in the Verkhovna Rada Arseniy Yatsenyuk, the action of Article 10 of the Constitution of Ukraine is now restored, according to which the only state language of the republic is Ukrainian, RBC reports. He also explained that the abolition of the law “On the Fundamentals of the State Language Policy” will not affect the rights of the Russian -speaking population.

UNN agency, citing the leader of the Freedom party, Oleg Tyagnibok, reports that the deputies of the Verkhovna Rada began to develop a new bill on national languages, the Ukrainian language will be fixed in it as the only state.
