“Our reaction is beyond the bounds”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and ordinary users were outraged by the photo in the Euronews community

A photograph of a desecrated monument to the Soviet army published on the Euronews channel's Facebook page caused a flurry of negativity both from ordinary users and from the Russian Foreign Ministry. As a result, the channel had to apologize, and the dissatisfied moved to the Lenta.ru community, which joked about the incident.

Late in the evening of February 24, a photograph of a desecrated monument to the Soviet army in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, was published on the page of the Russian representative office of the European news channel Euronews. The bas-relief depicting one of the fighters was painted in the colors of the Ukrainian flag, and a girl posed against the background of the monument.

The channel placed the same photo on the “cover” of its page - the space that serves as the background for the avatar and basic information. The photo itself, and especially its appearance on the cover, caused a flurry of negative comments.

Immediately there were proposals to boycott the channel or achieve a ban on its broadcasting in Russia. At the same time, there were calls to boycott Bulgaria itself.

” quickly appeared The account “ Euronews Net , which actively published in the comments its proposal to unite to jointly fight the channel. At the time of writing, 14 users were added to the account as friends.

Euronews itself, by the way, tried to respond to one of the remarks, but did not meet with much understanding from indignant readers.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs joined the group of critics of the TV channel. The Foreign Ministry published a screenshot of the Euronews page on Facebook, accompanied by words of condemnation. More than 500 more comments appeared under the Foreign Ministry’s post, mostly of a negative nature.

A few hours later, Euronews changed the cover photo, and did it twice at once. But there was no stopping the readers: they continued to criticize the channel for the previous cover.

A little later, the channel published a statement in which it explained that resonant photographs are included on the cover, and not pictures whose content is supported by the channel.

The next day, a number of media outlets, including Lenta.ru, wrote about the scandal surrounding the Euronews cover. The latter’s employees traditionally accompanied the announcement of the note on social networks with their own commentary.

The comment provoked a new wave of criticism, this time on the Lenta.ru Facebook page and in relation to the publication. The community administration actively participated in the dialogue.

So far the scandal around Euronews has stopped at this stage. It is not yet clear whether prominent media figures and deputies will speak out against it, as in the case of the Dozhd poll.
