The European Parliament called on EU member countries to freeze the assets of former president Viktor Yanukovych and his close associates. This is stated in the resolution of the BI adopted on Thursday. Also, the European deputies called for the strict execution of previously adopted sanctions regarding the guilty of the deaths of people.
“The European Parliament calls for the investigation of the mass assignment of state funds and assets by friends and the“ family ”of the ousted President Yanukovych, to freezing all their assets before clarifying how they were received, and if they are proved that they were stolen to the return of these assets by the governments of member countries,” the resolution says.
The resolution also calls for economic assistance to Ukraine. It is about a short -term program for overcoming the crisis in which the country ended up and the support of structural reforms.
The resolution recalls that the EU is ready to sign an agreement on the association and trade with Ukraine as soon as the political crisis is resolved. But the partnership is not “the ultimate goal in cooperation between Ukraine and the EU,” the document says. Deputies of the European Parliament recall that any European country, including Ukraine, can apply for EU membership, if it adheres to democracy, the main freedoms of human and minorities, and also ensures the rule of law.
The Euroduts also called on Russia not to provide economic and even more military pressure on Ukraine.
According to estimates, the state of Yanukovych's family is $ 12 billion . Such data were published on Wednesday by a senior researcher at the Peterson International Economy Institute, a former adviser to the Ukrainian Government for Economic Affairs Anders Oslund. After the elimination of Yanukovych, the official extortion of the Ukrainian business should come to an end, which makes it possible for the economy to recover, Oslund believes.
“In fact, Ukraine’s GDP grew by 3.3 percent over the last quarter of 2013, since the protests forced the president to moderate his favoritism. Nevertheless, a lot can and should be done very quickly, because Ukraine ends with money,” Zlund warns. If the new government is going to return at least part of the loot, he will need international assistance, he said.
On Wednesday, the organization to combat financial crimes of the US Department of Finance (Fincen) recommended financial institutions to carefully monitor the movements of funds in the accounts of Yanukovych and other seniorly -faced persons of Ukraine who resigned or left Kiev. Fincen also resembles US financial institutions that they should carefully check personal bank accounts registered on or on behalf of large foreign politicians.
