Madrid defeated Schalke 6:1 away

Yesterday, two more first matches of the 1/8 finals of the Champions League took place. Turkish Galatasaray achieved a 1:1 draw at home against English Chelsea. And the Spanish Real, having defeated the German Schalke on the road - 6:1, actually guaranteed themselves access to the quarterfinals.

In the confrontation between Chelsea and Galatasaray, the leader of the English Championship was considered the favorite. The Turkish club's chance lay in the positive result of the first match, which Roberto Mancini's team played on their home field.

Chelsea head coach Jose Mourinho on Wednesday chose the traditional defensive model of play for his team's away matches. The meeting started out in the best possible way for the Londoners. They opened the scoring in the 9th minute. Andre Schurrle, with a pass from the left flank, found Cesar Azpilicueta on the edge of the penalty area, whose cross was completed by Fernando Torres with a shot from the goal line.

Having opened the scoring, Chelsea focused on maintaining a positive result and succeeded in doing so, not allowing Galatasaray to create a single dangerous chance in the entire first half. At the beginning of the second half of the game, Torres could clear up all questions when Eden Hazard brought him one on one with an excellent long-range pass, but the forward was unable to beat Galatasaray goalkeeper Fernando Muslera.

Meanwhile, the Istanbul team’s pressure on the opponents’ goal increased, which allowed them to eventually achieve their goal. First, after Wesley Snyder's cross, Didier Drogba headed the ball to the far post, from where Selcuk Inan tried to push it into the net, hitting the upright from half a meter away. And then, in the 65th minute, the Chelsea players failed in the center of defense and allowed Aurélien Shedge to shoot into the goal from point-blank range after a corner and equalize the score.

For some time after scoring, Galatasaray attacked and once forced London goalkeeper Peter Cech to save his team - the goalkeeper jumped into a corner ball after a long-range shot by Alex Telles. But then the game gradually calmed down and ended in a 1:1 draw.

If in the English-Turkish confrontation the intrigue remains until March 18, when the return match will take place, then in the Sсhalke-Real pair it was completely exhausted after the first meeting in Gelsenkirchen, where the Spaniards crushed the opponent with a score of 6:1. Karim Benzema put Madrid ahead in the 13th minute when, after a combination involving Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo, he took advantage of a rebound from Schalke defender Felipe Santana and fired home. In the 21st minute, Bale flashed, who, having received the ball on the right flank, beat several opponents and increased his team's lead in the score.

The second half turned into a real beating of German football players.

First, Cristiano Ronaldo showed off his dribbling, bringing the result to a devastating 3:0. The 2013 Ballon d'Or winner then backheeled the assist to Karim Benzema, who scored a double. And finally, Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo also scored their second goals.

Schalke responded with only a prestige goal from Klaas Jan Huntelaar.

After a 6:1 victory, Real can prepare for the quarter-finals.
