Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Paet called for an investigation into crimes committed during the confrontation between the government and the opposition in Kyiv. According to Postimees , he made a corresponding statement at a press conference on March 5.

“What actually happened in Kyiv must be clarified by the investigation. I think that many want an independent investigation to be carried out in Ukraine,” the minister noted.

Paet's press conference followed the leak of a recording of his conversation with EU foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton in late February. During that conversation, a version was expressed about the possible involvement of one of the representatives of the “new coalition” in the murders in Kyiv.

The Estonian Foreign Ministry, we recall, has already confirmed that the recording is genuine. As Paet clarified at a press conference, the telephone conversation with Ashton took place on February 26, after his visit to Ukraine. He expressed frustration that “such talk reaches those who should not hear it.”

Commenting on the essence of the conversation, Paet said that he “did not make any assessments, but only expressed concern.” The minister opposed this recording being used to “discredit the new government of Ukraine.”

According to the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, “relevant institutions” are engaged in finding out exactly how the leak occurred. In turn, the head of the parliamentary commission on foreign affairs, Marco Mihkelson, as reported by ERR , has already stated that Paet’s conversation with Ashton was allegedly monitored by Russian intelligence services.

Ashton has yet to comment on the leak. At the same time, to the recording that appeared on the Internet, as ITAR-TASS the Russian Foreign Ministry drew attention reported. A department source said the EU's lack of response was "surprising."

During a telephone conversation with the EU High Representative, the head of the Estonian Foreign Ministry referred to information received from a doctor named Olga (the media identified her as the coordinator of the Maidan medical service Olga Bogomolets; information about her conversation with Paet can be found on the website of the Estonian Embassy in Moscow, she herself , however, told Vzglyad that she had not met Paet) , who helped the victims of Maidan Nezalezhnosti. “As Olga said, the evidence indicates that snipers killed people on both sides, police officers and people on the streets... It was the same snipers who killed people on both sides,” Paet said. He also expressed the opinion that the “new coalition” does not want to find out what really happened. “The understanding is becoming increasingly clear that it was not Yanukovych, but someone from the new coalition who was behind the snipers,” the minister concluded (his words can be heard at approximately 09:00 in the recording). Ashton responded by saying that this really needs to be looked into.

In Kyiv, at the end of 2013 and the beginning of 2014, mass anti-government actions (“Euromaidan”) took place, which repeatedly escalated into riots and clashes between radical opposition supporters and employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The most violent clashes, during which firearms were also used, occurred in mid-February. As a result, according to official data, more than 90 people were killed, including representatives of security forces. The opposition accused the authorities of using snipers against protesters; it was alleged that these were supposedly snipers from the internal troops. The internal troops denied this .

After the change of power in Ukraine, criminal proceedings were launched in the case of massacres in Kyiv. The defendants were President Viktor Yanukovych, removed from power, and former heads of security forces. The new head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Arsen Avakov , stated that a certain “third force” was involved in the armed confrontation in Kiev.

The Estonian Foreign Ministry spoke in favor of an independent investigation into the events in Kyiv
