The euro exchange rate set by the Bank of Russia on March 6 was reduced by 41 kopecks to 49.54 rubles. The official dollar exchange rate fell by 23 kopecks to 36.08 rubles.

On the Moscow Exchange on March 5, the European currency rose in price by ten kopecks to 49.65 rubles by 14:00, the dollar exchange rate increased by eight kopecks to 36.14 rubles. In the first minutes of trading on Wednesday, the ruble strengthened, but then exchange rates began to rise.

At the beginning of this week, there was high volatility in the dollar and euro exchange rates against the backdrop of the Crimean crisis. On March 3, the American and European currencies rose significantly in price. To contain an even greater collapse of the ruble, the Central Bank had to spend $11.4 billion. The regulator also raised the key rate by 1.5 percentage points to seven percent.

A day later, the ruble began to strengthen against the backdrop of statements by Russian President Vladimir Putin, who announced that there were no plans to send troops into the territory of Ukraine.

Investors, fearing the economic consequences of the Russian armed intervention in Crimea, staged a sale of shares. As a result, on March 3, the Moscow Exchange indices fell by 10-12 percent. The next day, the indicators recovered part of the collapse - the MICEX and RTS indices grew by about five percent.

On March 1, the Federation Council, at the request of Russian President Vladimir Putin, allowed Russia to send troops into the territory of Ukraine. The head of state justifies possible armed intervention by the need to protect the interests of the Russian Federation in the eastern part of Ukraine and ensure the safety of Russian citizens.
